Last May, the Houston Symphony invited me to do some work for them. They flew me to Houston, arranged a limousine from the airport, and put me up at the Lancaster Hotel—another memorable example of Southern hospitality.

After I finished at Jones Hall, Chief Operating Officer Vicky Dominguez and Director of Concert Operations Meredith Williams took me to dinner at a wonderful steakhouse, where I enjoyed steak and Scotch. During the evening, Vicky invited Muffie and me to the Symphony’s gala on September 19—Muffie’s birthday.

The gala’s organizers mentioned that board member and major donor John Rydman hoped to have his friend Matthew McConaughey appear as a guest speaker. When I learned that John and his wife, Karen, owned Spec’s, the Texas liquor-store chain with more than 200 locations, I offered to create and donate a special case for them.

The gala weekend was unforgettable. The first photos are from my Houston trip in May; the rest are from the gala and Muffie’s birthday celebration.

BTW we met John and he loved the case we made for him!

Cheers! 🍻

I met Muffie Lenneberg in San Francisco in 1975. She was a receptionist for producer/manager, David Rubinson. I was a driver for Studio Instrument Rentals.

One day I went to make a delivery at David’s office, Muffie was crying at her desk.
When I asked her what was wrong, she said David gave everyone in the office tickets to see the Pointer Sisters except for her.
So, I told her, “I can get into any venue in the Bay Area. Where is the concert?”
She said the Circle Star Theater.

To make a very long story shorter, that evening I picked her up, we drove to the Circle Star, I had her wait in the delivery van while I went to find the production manager.
I told him I needed two seats or just watch the show from backstage. He had me sit and wait, and he went to the box office.
When I was waiting, the artist who was the opening act sat next to me backstage. It was Chuck Berry. Yup, that was pretty cool. I said hello and he said hello back. He told me was a little nervous. He said he always gets a little nervous before he gets up on stage.

My friend came back and gave me two tickets.
When Muffie and I went to sit down, the seats were right in front of her boss.

It was a good night!

And we are still together.

Here are a few pics of us then when we were in our 20’s thru now when we are in our 70’s!

Time does flies when you are having fun!!!

Love you so much Muffie! ❤️🌷🌺🌸🍾

Many of you know that for the last year, I have been working very hard on my memoir, Some Things Take a Lifetime to Get Right. With more than 200 pages now written, I felt I had reached the point where I needed to take the work to the next level.

So I applied to UCLA Extension’s Memoir IV. The application required me to submit a writing sample, a synopsis of the memoir, a personal statement explaining what I hoped to gain from the class, and a list of my previous writing courses and instructors.

Today I received the news: I have been accepted into Memoir IV with Monica Holloway for the Fall 2026 quarter!

Memoir IV is an advanced workshop for writers who are already well into a book-length memoir and are ready to focus on serious critique, revision, structure, self-editing, and preparing the manuscript for its next stage. The level of work is comparable to an advanced graduate writing workshop.

I’m really excited about this next step. There is still a lot of work ahead, but after spending so much of the last year getting these stories onto the page, it feels good to know the book is moving forward.

I got in! ❤️👍🏾😎🍻🎉

Flashback Friday!

Back in 2006, (WOW 20 years ago!) when we were raising money for the production of my first full-length play, Common Bonds, Jackson Browne, Arnold McCuller and the late Kenny Rankin stepped up to help.

One of the characters in the play was a deaf teenager, and it was important to me that deaf audience members could experience the production as well. We needed to raise enough money to hire an ASL interpreter.

After Arnold sang and Jackson came onstage, Jackson said something I’ll never forget:

“I’m not sure about having to follow Arnold’s performance.” 😂

Coming from Jackson Browne, that was quite a compliment!

The benefit at the Hollywood Bowl cottage raised enough money to pay for the ASL interpreter for the entire month-long run of the play.

Hard to believe this was twenty years ago. And pretty cool to find the Los Angeles Times clipping again.

Some memories are worth hanging onto. ❤️

Hello friends,

I was backing Muffie’s F-150 into the driveway this afternoon when my neighbor across the street stopped to say hello.

I was doing fine until he asked me how I was doing.

I told him, “Our big dog, Clinton, just passed away an hour ago.”

And I couldn’t hold back the tears any longer.

Clinton waited by the front door for Muffie and me to get home before he took his last breath.

How do these incredible creatures have such amazing instincts, so much love, and such enormous hearts? I don’t know.

What I do know is that when I left for work this morning, I had no idea it would be Clinton’s last day.

That big dog helped us through so much. He was there through Covid, the loss of my sister, my kidney donation, Muffie going through chemotherapy, my quadruple bypass, and finally, losing our home in the fire. Through all of it, Clinton was there.

Muffie found him at the Pasadena Humane Society and fell in love with him.

He had been found on the street and, in the beginning, he wouldn’t even let us touch him. He threw up in our car for a couple of years. He even got kicked out of the dog park for being too aggressive!

But underneath that tough-guy exterior was the most loving, loyal and caring doggie you could ever ask for.

Yesterday morning, I sat on Clinton’s bed with him and Mingus. I told him how much I loved him and how much joy he had brought to our family.

I’m so grateful I did that.

Even as I’m writing this, I swear I can hear his footsteps coming to say hello to me…

Or maybe he just wants to eat. ❤️

I love you, Clinton.

Thank you for waiting for us to come home.

And thank you for all the joy, love and comfort you brought into our lives.

You were such a good boy.

We will miss you more than you could ever know. ❤️
