And to think there’s still people who disregard the power of socials 🙃🍪Watching @bakedbybbean grow from an Instagram lockdown side hustle account into a brick and mortar flagship store with queues out the door is such a brilliant reminder that social media isn’t just about likes, followers or going viral. Sat in the gorgeous cafe at the weekend I was reminded that when it’s done well, it’s about building trust, creating a community and giving people a reason to repeatedly buy from you (and develop unhealthy obsessions with the mini egg cookies)Every behind the scenes clip, every new product launch, every customer interaction and aesthetically pleasing selfie at the truck, they’ve all been building towards this moment.This isn’t just the opening of a bakery. It’s proof that digital first brands can become high street success stories. I’m SO over the fact that we’re beginning to regularly have to wonder whether we’re accidentally starring in someone else’s content 🫣One minute I’m putting mascara on during a train journey thinking I’m going to end up a meme. The next I’m in the background of someone’s TikTok on Market Street. Or I’m walking through a café and suddenly I’m part of a stranger’s vlog. I was on a live stream in a pub recently, like 🫠🫠🫠 let us live.Most of the time, it’s harmless, but sometimes, it really isn’t.We talk a lot about not posting other people’s children without permission, especially around sports days and school events, but I think the conversation needs to be bigger than that.Every face in the background belongs to a person with a life you know nothing about. Someone may have left an abusive relationship and be trying not to be found. Someone may have changed their identity online for their own safety. Someone may have cut contact with a parent or family member and doesn’t want their whereabouts shared.❌ Someone may simply not want to be on the internet❌Not everyone is trying to build a personal brand, wild I know 😅 and not everyone wants to become content.As someone who works in socials, I LOVE seeing people create. I encourage businesses to get their phones out and tell their stories every single day. But good content shouldn’t come at the expense of someone else’s privacy.Before you hit post, take five seconds to look at who’s in the background. Blur a face. Change your angle. Crop the shot. Ask permission if someone’s a key part of the frame.Being considerate isn’t about killing creativity. It’s about remembering that the people around us are humans first, content second. by @january92socials
