Back on Mont Rebei. All the way to pitch seven this time, rehearsing the moves, reading the wall, enjoying the process. Good company makes the difference on a route like this.

This line has been in the works for over a decade. Seven pitches of limestone above a turquoise gorge in Catalonia, bolted ground-up, topping out at about 9a+ One of the most demanding multi-pitch projects in the world and one of the most beautiful places to keep coming back to.

Adam Ondra on Egoland, Marmolada. Onsight attempt.

Onsight on such a route hits different. It rained a lot the evening before and it washed off most of the chalk from Berni, who was also rigging the static line for us to film from. On the 8c crux pitch, Adam couldn’t see the hold, tried different beta, and a tiny spike snapped off under his hand. Onsight gone.

Adam falls and we got a reminder of how loud can he scream. Then, just as fast, he was back to enjoying the climbing as if nothing had happened and sends the pitch on second go with ease.

Opened by Berni Rivadossi and Max Faletti, redpointed by Berni and Luca Bana. Grey rock, 30 degree overhang, then 7c to 8a pitches above that Adam calls « total climbing ecstasy. »

The stakes were high, and we felt it behind the lens too. Right as Adam set off on that crux pitch, the sun hit it, and light and shadows started racing across the face.

Always dreamed of having a long list of talented people on the team when shooting for a brand.

Here’s mine.

Client: @rockytalkies
Creative and art direction: me
Producer: me
Photo: me
Video: me
Drone: me
Rigger: Ella Weight
Belayer: Ella Wright
Climbers: @faymanners @ellamarywright

Fay and Ella had just come down from a first ascent in the Mont Blanc range. Three days at altitude and I still had things left on my list. On day four, we made the call that morning, scouted the location, Ella set the static line, I found the angles.

Radios on the whole time, which is the only reason it worked with one of us up top and everyone else spread across the face.

Most of the time this is the whole production. Me and an athlete. A fifteen person crew gets you things I can’t get. Two people get you a shoot that happens at all, on a morning nobody planned for, after everyone is already tired. by @janvirt.official

If you ask me now what went wrong, I would say everything.

It was July 2020. I packed for a few days on the glacier, meals, snacks, a warm sleeping bag. It turned out to be a day trip instead for which I partially blame my French at the time, maybe that intel got lost in translation.

The route was harder than expected and we ran out of day. We didn’t make it past the third pitch of Voie Petit.

That same afternoon, on the walk back to Midi, the radio tower never got closer. Everyone who’s been there knows the walk back, it feels endless! With a humble heart I handed some of my gear to the two. We caught the last lift out of sheer mercy and rode down next to a huge trash can from the restaurant…Exhausted, I leaned on the wall and almost passed out.

The rope came back core shot. Nobody knows how and where.

Six years later, this summer, Hugo went back stronger with way more experience in the Alpine, this time with Esteban Daligault, going for three big routes in under 24 hours. They climbed two of them, 900 meters in eleven hours, before a thunderstorm ended it. Amazing feat either way and I am sure they are already planning the return.

I would reshoot every frame from that trip, bad angles, camera settings…what I wouldn’t redo is the experience, it paved the way to where I am now.

August 2024. Climbing on the world’s biggest stage, and I had a front row seat.

A year on, still processing some of these moments.

Far from the famous climbing destinations, these limestone walls have their own history and identity.

When Grimper Magazine asked me if I would be interested in documenting the cliffs around Poitiers, I knew something special was coming. Same feeling as the Normandy and Haute-Loire assignments, when you first ask yourself: but is there even climbing here?

Surprised upon arrival, every time. These places have a lot to offer, and it’s not the grades. It’s the remote, hidden gems of France, kind people, always motivated to share their playground with the rest of us.

Thanks again for another enchanting assignment Grimper Magazine 🙏

We are down to only a few pieces from this limited edition run.

Last year, we released a run of signed, limited edition prints from first ascent in Buoux, France. The positive response we received blew us away. Every penny from the sale goes straight to Climbing for a Reason, an NGO using climbing as a tool for change in Angola and beyond.

Once they’re gone, that’s it, no reprints.
