Thank you, @clayhoustontx.
I don't take this recognition lightly. It's a validation that I am doing something right, that someone is seeing and believing in it. It's an honor!

FAMILY, MEMORY, HOME — IN CLAY.

Japheth Asiedu-Kwarteng (@japheth_global) is one of the five inaugural recipients of the 2026 Spector Craft Prize for Emerging Artists.

Drawing on his Ghanaian heritage, Asiedu-Kwarteng explores family, memory, identity, and home through bold, sculptural ceramics.

Dining with Mama & Dada: In Space (2026) brings stoneware, stained porcelain, and underglaze together in a work rooted in warm memories of home.

Ghanaian Ceramics on the Rise
By JAPHETH ASIEDU-KWARTENG @japheth_global

Within this framework, their ceramics function as sites of negotiation rather than nostalgia. Identity is articulated as fluid and continually reshaped through movement and exchange, positioning Ghanaian ceramics as a dynamic contemporary practice grounded in cultural specificity while responsive to global circulation.

These artists, whom I refer to as the “Big Six,” are Vincent ‘Sniper’ Frimpong, Ross Owusu Junior, Teddy Osei, Eugene Ofori Agyei, Eric Andre, and Japheth Asiedu-Kwarteng. To call them the Big Six is not out of place since their practice to rewrite the narrative of Ghanaian ceramics and the Ghanaian story in the diaspora is similar to the exploits of the big six - Kwame Nkrumah, J.B. Danquah, Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, and William Ofori Atta – who gained independence for Ghana on March 6, 1957.

As their works enters public and private collections nationally and internationally – including Mississippi Museum of Art, Jackson, Mississippi; University Galleries, Normal, Illinois; Franz, Duke of Bavaria, Contemporary Art Collection, Munich, Germany; Changchun International Ceramic Museum, Changchun, China – it points toward a future in which Ghanaian ceramics is recognized not as peripheral, but as an active and evolving contributor to global contemporary art.

In This Issue - Homeland and Materiality
By editor-at-large VINCENT “SNIPER” FRIMPONG @sniper_ceramica

"When stories of African and international art are written, often the analysis is shared by someone with little time spent within these artists' homelands, who lacks understanding of lived experiences, and is removed from important cultural and social contexts. As an artist and educator from Africa, I feel it is vital to gather artists who are raised and rooted in African and international places to share our journeys within the ceramic arts. And for our discourse to be written with our stories at the forefront, because we are invested in the portrayal of our art practices, written and visual, to be for and by us. With respect to transparency, the authors Japheth Asiedu-Kwarteng, Teddy Osei, and Ross Junior Owusu are Ghanaian practitioners and scholars who have mobilized the knowledge and experiences of artists from Cameroon, Canada, Ghana, Iran, Nigeria, and South Africa. These authors highlight multiple international contemporary artists who showcase where they come from by adding to the intercontinental ceramic arts history, pedagogy, ceramic methods, and its future."

I've been exploring ABUSUA KURUWA to make vessels that embody memory, belonging, labor, architecture and technology.
What impact do these make in our lives?
What marks do they leave?

Former Artaxis Board member, Japheth Asiedu Kwarteng (@japheth_global), just updated his Artaxis page with new work! This is ” Dining with Mama & Dada: Purity #1”. Japheth writes about this work, "The Dining with Mama and Dada series draws from “Abusua Kuruwa” - the Asante family pot that preserves hair, nails, and other belongings of relatives of the departed. Traditionally kept in a royal stool house, shrine, or cemetery, it holds presence beyond absence. This body of work embodies memory, food, labor, architecture, and belonging. It asks how we remember - how we hold the ones who are gone, and what remains when touch becomes memory." Learn more at https://artaxis.org/artist/japheth-asiedu-kwarteng/
