Begonia truncatifolia “dark form.” She dropped the other older big leaf when it arrived a couple of weeks ago, likely due to acclimation— so it lost the lovely symmetry of its growth habit and now looks kinda lopsided. Still a beaut! Those leaves look and feel like full-grain luxury cowhide leather with a lovely patina. It also decided to send out a bloom, and the male flower opened fully yesterday.

Give me all the Begonia dark forms!!!

Begonia mazae var. nigricans is easily one of my fave Begonias. I love how it responds so quickly to light— a few days in a sunny room and the leaves started to show more of its green. I’ve seen posts on IG where theirs were almost completely black and had more pronounced iridescence. Eager to experiment with some propagations to see how I can grow them to that state 🌱👹

One simply cannot have too many black plants. Colocasia esculenta “Dragon Taro,” in its juvenile-ish form, still without its signature bright pink/purple.

Been craving to work with my hands, and nothing beats the scent of fresh moss and bare roots.

Pursuing my curiosity to experiment led to this Tamandama arrangement (inspired by the wonderful @atelir_te) featuring:

- A variegated Dendrobium sp that has been blooming for weeks and I hope it does not stop,
- Some rooted cuttings of Selaginella wildenowii variegated (I hope it continues to root in this setup),
- Davalia sp cuttings
- And a Platycerium alcicorne “Africa” pup—the first time I tried excising a pup from a mother plant, haha.

They seem to have stayed happy for close to a week now; the true test is to see if it stays healthy over the next weeks and months. Such is life, we try to thrive through the experiments we put ourselves through. 🌱

Dioscorea sp. black

Who needs therapy when you can take care of dark form leaves? (Or iridescent ones)

Selaginella intermedia “Bronze”

Love how you can see Selaginella’s dichotomous branching so clearly here, with the feather-like structures also so prominent being a larger Selaginella. Also this color is stunning!

Also hey welcome back to me 🪬🌱

Summertime means suffering for the selaginellas, and with the previous phase of neglect in my life I needed to make amends and prevent any further damage to the ones who’ve grown wild in our office outdoor garden.

Harvested some shoots a month ago and kept them in my indoor glass cabinet and they’ve been quite happy, with a more blue-green iridescence than the pinkish-brown greens that are exposed to bright lights outdoor.

Aside from its almost-faerie-like hues, the growth habit of Selaginella wildenowii is so gorgeous—how it grows upward and long and tall, winding around and sending its roots down, almost like a bonsai of sorts. I know it’s commonly labeled as “Peacock Fern,” but to me it looks almost like Quetzalcoatl—the Feathered Serpent God if the Aztecs.

I’ve kept my plants down to a few more manageable handful of pieces, most of them inside a glass cabinet, but left somewhat neglected—because of many reasons that mostly boil down to where my head is at. I’ve been feeling a little guilty about it the last week or so, so I’ve been paying a bit more attention to them. This morning I realized that this almost-dry jungle orchid (Dendrobium platycaulon) has given one small bloom. Probably just a signal of the seasons shifting, but a nice little hopeful thought nonetheless.

Amorphophallus atroviridis emerging from slumber after half a year of dormancy. Like me. Hello!

Selaginella willdenowii, a forever favorite. Not to jinx it, but this is the most lush I’ve ever been able to grow this beauty in our outdoor garden. I gave it a long bed to scramble on and anchor its roots in, as it quickly outgrew its small pot from when I got it last November. It’s been quite hard to find these lately.

Apart from how wide its fronds have spread, I’m most def thrilled for the new growth points it shot out in the last weeks… and with that, I think it’s due to be moved to a larger home with maybe a moss wall soon, as it seems to be growing both horizontally and vertically. And also—bracing myself for incoming summer season. My last one—which was happily growing in the crevices on our rock wall, didn’t survive it last year, so I need to be on my toes.

To say that I’m obsessed with Begonia klemmei may be an understatement. I have way too many photos of them, but I can’t seem to do any justice to its queer beauty: electric green veins, golden hairs, velvet red underside. So here’s a photodump of three pots under my care—one growing in a shaded part of our outdoor garden, another indoors in a glass cabinet. The last in a deeper plastic pot set up like an open terrarium. Hoping to propagate them soon!

It started as a last-ditch effort to revitalize my leggy, crispy Selaginella sp—glass bowl, sphagnum peat, chunks of pumice, and kept in a glass cabinet. As the weeks went by I just started to add random things, and quickly turned into a bowl of favorites: tiny Davallia sp and Pyrrosia polydactylis (stowaways from a tub of collected mosses), and a small Begonia u606 (klemmei) propagation from Baguio. The Selaginella has started to send fronds from new growth points. Happy accidents. Happy Lunar New Year!
