What all can a simple brick represent? 🧱

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to share while emceeing the closing plenary of the Grantmakers in the Arts conference when I woke up yesterday morning. But I found the perfect piece of memorabilia to encapsulate my feelings about the theme I was given: “When Memory Becomes Mandate.”

Even as monuments to Memphis’s magnificent creativity are demolished and paved over, this brick, recovered from the rubble of the original Stax Records building, reminds me of something greater than the label’s untimely bankruptcy in 1975.

It represents the music and memories still being made today, as the Stax Museum, Stax Music Academy, and Soulsville Charter School carry that legacy forward on the very grounds where the original building once stood.

Our history is worth remembering, but our future is worth investing in.

Thanks to GIA, Rachel Knox, and DeMarcus Suggs for including me in both the opening and closing events of an enlightening week in Memphis. (Photos: @lookwhaticreated) by @jaredjaybboyd

Understanding. Stewardship. Participation. Resonance. by @jaredjaybboyd

Gratitude to Memphis Jazz Festival for inviting me to rock. Congrats for an incredible turnout all three days.

Honored to carry the legacies of many jazz greats who’ve called Memphis home. Jimmie Lunceford, Mulgrew Miller, Lil Hardin Armstrong, Lannie McMillan, Dub Jenkins, Donald Brown, Joyce Cobb, DiAnn Price, Charles Lloyd, Harold Mabern, Jamil Nasser, Phineas, Jr., Sr., and Calvin Newborn, Booker Little, George Coleman, Hank Crawford, Kirk Whalum, and many, many, more.

I’m grateful to the Southern Foodways Alliance for inviting me to speak at this year’s symposium and share some of the Memphis music history I’ve spent so much time researching, documenting, and thinking about.

My presentation explored what happened to the people, relationships, and infrastructure behind Memphis’ recording industry as the business changed in the 1970s and ‘80s.

At its heart, this was a story about interconnected families. I wanted to examine what a younger generation inherited from the people who helped build Memphis’ recording industry. They inherited knowledge, creative instincts, professional contacts, and, in some cases, the tools and resources to make something entirely their own.

Sometimes, the story isn’t that we’re “losing recipes.” Just as a dish might change when families migrate, small restaurants grow, or access to familiar ingredients becomes limited, the people carrying that hometown flavor forward must find ways to adapt it to new circumstances.

It was a privilege to bring that conversation to a room of people who care deeply about how Southern culture is made, preserved, and passed along.

Thanks to everyone who listened, asked questions, shared kind words, and made me feel welcome. And thanks again to SFA for making room for this story.

Special thanks to @azairelovejunt for your vision and vote of confidence.

Six years ago today, WYXR went on the air for the first time.

Every Oct. 5 since has given us a chance to look back at how much has changed, but maybe more importantly, to look around at all the people who have become part of this thing along the way.

Hundreds of volunteer DJs have passed through our studio. Thousands of records have spun on our turntables. We’ve welcomed artists, neighbors, listeners, visitors, and friends from across Memphis and well beyond it. Somehow, year after year, the crowd around us keeps getting bigger.

I remember what it felt like to pull the paper off those studio windows and finally introduce WYXR to Memphis. Six years later, I still get a kick out of looking around the room on Oct. 5 and seeing who has found their way into the community we’re building over the past year.

We get to do that again tonight. If WYXR has meant something to you over these six years, or if you’ve just been meaning to come see what we’ve been up to, I’d love to see you.

Morgan Freeman said it. I didn’t.

Memphis is more than our city. It’s Culture City. The Capital of the Mississippi Delta. It’s The Beautiful Land. The Bluff City. The 901.

As we celebrate 901 Day, let’s look forward to what Memphis can become, but also take some time to ask our elders about the fascinating and complicated past that made this city what it is.

Morgan Freeman and producer Eric Meier joined me to talk about bringing “Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience” home to Memphis. Hear the full interview this Friday at noon on WYXR 91.7 FM.

The performance comes to the University of Memphis’ Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center on Sept. 26. by @jaredjaybboyd
