A few years ago, I was hired to Gaff a docu-style medical commercial. We were tasked with building a lighting gag to cheat the look of the sun through stained glass moving along a wall as a time-lapse cheat. The stain glass didnt exist and using a glass gobo in a 1600w Joleko wouldn't work because we will be fighting ambient sunlight on location. We thought about going with an M40 and hope the reflector didn't muddy the hard lines too much. I didn't really have the time, or budget to order an HMI Beam Projector. We tried to do the gag with a 4x4 mirror to double the distance but it would be too many moving parts with a small crew.

I spent a good bit of time making a 4x4 stained glass frame out of party gel we had at the studio, and was able to stay within the color pallet the client requested. I used a layer of heat shield and then stuck the cut gel to it with diluted sprite (oldschool grip trick), then cheated the solder lines with black e-tape.

We used an older Matthew's Doorway Dolly, with skate wheels, on about 20' of track, for the movement of the light.

We did the test with an Aputure 600x with the F10 fresnal, since we owned several. At 100% intensity at 5600° K, at 800 ISO we were able to get a 5.6 in the center beam and a 2.8 on the fringe. The lamp was about 25 feet away from the muslin. The darker party gel (green and red) also caused some shift in intensity. This ended up working well in the test so thats what we went with on the day, but we did had to knock down the ambient light at the location, for this smaller lamp to read.

Here is the test. Let me know what yall think or if you have any suggestions for future gags like this.

And please let us know how we can be the solution to your problem.
