In '23 I quit drinking. In 2024 I got real, real screwed up and almost started again. Told myself I needed radical change if I wanted to stay sober.

TW: suicide

Ten years ago this month, I attempted to kill myself. I cannot remember the day because I was a drunken, depressed bender and the days just run together in my memory.

I came to the Grand Canyon back then as a way to run away from my life, and as a last hurrah. Something about this place changed me that day and I have dedicated each day of my life to being the best version of myself I can be since. Every day. I'm conscious of it, its work. Sometimes I fail, sometimes I misstep, sometimes I just don't want to be that guy that day, but I always wake up ready to try. Ready to do the work.

Today, I got to return to the Grand Canyon as a completely different man than the one that first laid eyes upon it.

I am grateful to be alive. I am grateful for my life. I am grateful to the Suicide Hotline for saving my life. I am grateful to wake up and do the work, to improve, to push myself further and further until I discover what the "best version of myself" actually means.

Sometimes I wish I could speak to my younger self, but, instead, I will speak to you. You are loved. You have value. You are seen. I'm not saying its gonna be easy, I'm saying its gonna be worth it.

Love to everyone in a struggle. by @jarredlujan
