Some early pre-production concept art for Disney Descendants: Wicked Wonderland
Young Ella: played by the incredible @morgandudley

I was fortunate to be invited back to the Descendants franchise during the early pre-production phase, this time by the amazing Costume Designer @juliacaston .This design was created as the production was beginning to take shape and long before the designs or script were refined into what would eventually become Descendants Wicked Wonderland.

It's always fascinating to look back at those early ideas and see how they evolve through collaboration into the final costumes audiences see on screen. I'm grateful to have been a small part of the creative process once again and hope you enjoy some of this early development work.

Loved creating these characters with Costume Designer @carolinecranstoun and her amazing team of artists that brought these rogues to screen. @oceandriveleather ,graphic artist Mel Siermaczeski, 3d sculpt Dane Saunders and many more.

These large productions are a team effort and this was a great team. Everyone truly brought their A-game and I think the final result speaks for itself.

It was a massive scene, with an incredible number of performers, and director @kimmygatewood absolutely crushed it. If there were any challenges on set, you'd never know from watching the finished sequence. Look forward to seeing the storyboards😁

Disney Descendants: Wicked Wonderland – "Dancing With the Enemy"

I was thrillled when Costume Designer @carolinecranstoun brought me in for this project. You couldn't ask for a more thoughtful and caring designer to work with. It was a true pleasure working with her team and the talented team at @oceandriveleather to bring these characters to life.

Everyone truly brought their A-game and I think the final result speaks for itself.

This was a huge build to oversee, with 16 Chessmen costumes that not only had to look great but also allow the performers to dance and see where they were going.

It was a massive scene, with an incredible number of performers, and director @kimmygatewood absolutely crushed it. If there were any challenges on set, you'd never know from watching the finished sequence. Look forward to seeing the storyboards😁

Throwback Thursday – Descendants 3 Edition

These Concept designs are from waaaayyy back in 2018. I've never personally posted these but with my second go round on Disney Descendants Wicked Wonderland premiering today on DisneyChannel and tomorrow on Disney+ I thought I'd post these: Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Prince Ben

It's been amazing to watch the Descendants franchise continue to grow. Thankfully Costume Designer @kara_saun brought me on D3 and her influence on the look and identity of this series really can't be overstated.

Tomorrow I'll share some of my concept art from Descendants: Wicked Wonderland.

Wicked For Good - Boq Valet

This was such a great look for @ethanslater as Boq. You can really see some of the Tin Man's eventual design language incorporated. You can also see some of the design adjustments in the embroidery and paneling from this initial concept to the final design. I'm assuming this was probably influenced by the Tin Man's final design, all of which was handled masterfully by @paultazewell and the U.K. crew and done well after I was off the project. Everyone of the costumes have an immense team behind them down to every last button and stitch. What a great world that was created. Hope everyone enjoyed @jonmchu

Wicked For Good - Boq Travel Suit

Because every man needs a good suit to travel in. The last look @paultazewell had me work on for Boq was his Travel suit played by @ethanslater . By this point in time we had pretty much established all of Boqs looks and overall design language. This one just kind of came right out and is simply stylish and fun. Paul and the entire costume department did such a fantastic job bringing these costumes and characters to life.

Of course a huge thank you to @9bcollective and @paultazewell for having me on the team and @jonmchu for putting together an amazing team and creating such great films.

Wicked For Good - Boq Shiz

Hope you all enjoyed Wicked: For Good as much as I enjoyed working on it. Being part of this project and watching it all come together has been an incredible experience. It’s surreal revisiting work from so long ago and finally seeing it all released into the world.

This look for Boq, played by @ethanslater was one of the very first designs @paultazewell had us explore, even though it doesn’t appear until the second film. From the start, we never approached these characters as belonging to two separate movies; we treated their journeys as a single character arc. That meant a lot of early sketching, exploring, and refining during this early pre-production phase.

What Paul and the entire team brought to life was amazing to see on the big screen. W.W. Denslow's classic Tin Man design in Frank Baum's original The Wizard of Oz were one of many inspirations Paul drew from for these designs. We even did some early rough exploratory sketches of the Tinman to see what elements could possibly echo through Boq’s various looks, and subtly foreshadow his eventual transformation.

The scene that we see this particular costume in was such a great quiet moment before diving into this Wicked finale. The scene was lit and filmed to perfection @jonmchu and @_alicebrooks_

Establishing characters in your scenes can elevate your set design to a keyframe by incorporating bits of the script to create a story moment. I did receive some great storyboard art that I incorpoated on the TVs. Not sure what artist did this but if it was you please take credit.
