One of the most difficult questions a child can ask isn't about homework or friendships.

It's:

"Where do I belong?"

For many families raising children abroad, identity isn't a destination; it's a journey.

Children notice the differences long before adults realise they do.

The words they use.

The food they eat.

The accent they have.

The holidays they celebrate.

Our role isn't to make them choose one culture over another.

We're to help them understand that every part of their story has value.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing a parent can say is:

"You don't have to choose."

Yet many Africans in the diaspora discover that building meaningful relationships, whether friendships or romantic ones, can feel more difficult than expected.
It's not always because people aren't interested.

Sometimes, it's because life moves differently. Busy schedules, long commutes, different cultures, and fewer shared spaces mean genuine connections often require more intention than they did back home.
Instead of waiting for relationships to happen naturally, don't be afraid to take the first step.

Send the message.
Accept the invitation.
Follow up after a good conversation.
Suggest the coffee meet-up.
Meaningful relationships rarely grow from a single encounter; they're built through consistent effort from both sides.
