It is such an honour to announce that my portrait of the inspiring @alexgreenwich has been selected as a finalist for the 2023 Archibald prize. Having my work displayed at the Art Gallery of NSW is a dream come true, and I am beyond grateful for this amazing opportunity.

I had the honour of painting the legendary @thisianroberts

Originally, I wanted to talk about how brave it was for him to come out when he did, especially in the spotlight, at a time when most of us struggled to come out even in private. But when we met, what struck me more was something we don’t hear enough about: the long-term damage athletes like Ian carry after years in professional sport.

He’s undergone multiple surgeries, lives with chronic pain, and has even experienced memory loss from brain injuries, all because of the game. That stuck with me.

This piece focuses on the space around him, the silence, the cost, and what’s often left unsaid. taken in Sydney, Australia by @jasjowett

I had the best time making this and was sad to see him go. We decided to call him our Paul junior. Thank you @mr_paulie_b for the best brief which was to come up with something that I really loved. So happy to see him in his new home 💙 by @jasjowett
