The Last Sandstorm, A Memoir

About the Book:

In her memoir, "The Last Sandstorm", Jasmin Faulk-Dickerson tells the story of her first 25 years in Saudi Arabia, before her daring escape to the West. The author was born in the 1970's and grew up in the shadow of Riyadh, a city that was burgeoning into economic modernity, a sharp contrast with its archaic treatment of women. This memoir is both a coming of age story and an immigrant's saga, two overlapping narratives that are told with generosity, humor, and a pervasive sense of longing and loss. The narrative documents what it means to grow up with unanswered questions, strive to conform and belong, and finally, dare to leave behind a family, a country, and a way of life–the known world. In turn, Faulk-Dickerson invites us to take measure of our own potential and to participate fully in our own lives. While Jasmin experienced the privileges and privations of being female in a conservative Muslim regime, she survived and thrived by daring to imagine an entirely different kind of life. Jasmin shares the particulars of her daily life–school, Muslim customs, popular culture, family life, friends–that create a palpable sense of what it was like to be loved but also thwarted by circumstances. Out of sight of the censors, Jasmin became an aficionado of popular culture, drawing on music, dance, film, and TV icons from Europe and the United States. In the privacy of her bedroom/studio, she became an artist, performer, and feminist freedom fighter–a magnificent leap of faith that eventually translates into the courage to leave.

International Day of the Girl Child | October 11

Girls’ rights are not symbolic. They must be protected.

Today, the UN recognizes the challenges girls face worldwide. But recognition alone is not enough.

Girls deserve privacy, bodily autonomy, freedom from violence, and equal treatment under the law. Their sex-based rights must be protected, not merely promised.

At WoLF, this is why our work matters.

We’ve been asking women: What would you tell the girls of the future?

Today, we’re sharing some of their powerful words, reminding us what we owe the next generation.

🔗 Add your voice. Submit your letter through the link in our bio.

For every girl and her future.

Judgment is easy. You get a villain, a sense of superiority, and a crowd to agree with you. Thinking asks more of you—including the possibility that you’re wrong.

Jung’s concept of the shadow invites an uncomfortable question: could what we condemn in someone else reveal something we haven’t faced in ourselves?
Our fears, contradictions, unlived life, cowardice, envy, and unwanted feelings can shape how we see others without our realizing it.

I observe how people react to disagreement. Disagreement alone would not make me dismiss someone, negate their worth, or walk away from a relationship that has other shared interests. For me, someone seeing the world differently is not sufficient reason to treat them as though they’ve harmed me.
But maybe that’s because I’m blessed with the gift of my multi-cultural lens.

Ultimately, there’s comfort in belonging to a group. Religions, cults, ideologies, are all founded on this principle. Questioning its imposed judgments can put that belonging at risk. It’s worth asking: have I thought this through, or have I learned what I’m supposed to think to remain accepted?

Sometimes what we condemn in another person touches something we haven’t examined in ourselves. That’s a question worth asking ourselves before turning a person into a label.

We can challenge each other’s ideas and still recognize each other’s humanity. We can disagree without making someone an outcast, an enemy.

Agreement can feel like certainty.
It doesn’t mean we’ve done the thinking. by @jasmin.faulk

Titles tell you what someone does; they rarely tell you why.

The “why” behind my work is deeply personal. my lived experiences didn’t just shape my perspective—they gave me a purpose. They led me to a life committed to asking difficult questions, challenging assumptions, and advocating for conversations grounded in truth, critical thinking, and intellectual honesty.

The most meaningful conversations don’t begin with agreement—they begin with a willingness to think critically and engage honestly.

Whether you’re new here or you’ve been quietly following along, welcome. I encourage thoughtful dialogue, honest questions, and the courage to challenge assumptions. by @jasmin.faulk

What a dynamic exchange of stories, ideas, and perspectives at the Empowered Women Book Club on September 30, 2026.

From cultural and women’s issues to the deeply personal journey of writing a memoir, the conversation was candid and vivacious.

Joelle and I could have happily kept the conversation going well beyond the time limit as we appreciated the openness and connection we shared with the author, Jasmin Faulk. by @jasmin.faulk

For many women, the reality of abuse goes beyond the abuse itself. Leaving isn’t simply walking out the door. It means finding a way to survive afterward.

No woman should have to choose between violence and homelessness.

On Wednesday, September 30, Joëlle and I will have the pleasure of hosting Jasmin Faulk, author of The Last Sandstorm, a memoir.

We are delighted to welcome Jasmin and hear, in her own words, about her upbringing in Saudi Arabia and the transformative personal journey that ultimately brought her to the United States.

There is something special about meeting the person behind the pages—and hearing the lived story behind the memoir.

This one is personal.

Why I support XX-XY Athletics, why I believe women should be free to speak honestly about what it means to be female, and why compassion should never require us to silence ourselves.
