it all started in 2009 with my first album..

since then, I’ve performed on stages big and small all around the world..

I also created, coordinated and hosted my own events, including a music festival that ran for four years in my hometown..

along the way, I’ve been invited to speak, and honored with recognition for both my music and my event work..

now, from here in Slovenia, I’m exploring my voice and new sounds more deeply..

the story behind one of my languages
#Arabic

I was invited by @doc_horvath to join her class called Intercultural Communications my last semester at @uofnorthflorida which ended with a two week trip to Egypt to meet some of the students we’d been communicating with throughout the semester

I fell in love with Cairo, its people, its food, Khan Elkhalili, its traffic, its pollution, its potholes 😅 all of it charmed me .. and I wanted to learn the language..

so I went back to the USA and painted the most colorful picture of Egypt to my family and asked to go back for a year to study Arabic

my family has always supported my endeavors, and so I spent a year in an intensive Arabic course at @auc_egypt

the course also offered some musical classes .. how fitting

I performed several times in Egypt .. even at the famed @elsawyculturewheel ..here’s a record of my first performance 🥰🧿

did I mention everyone smokes in Egypt.. everyone 😜 #shisha

my classes were held on the most beautiful campus in the world @auc_egypt

my dorm was perfect

but I spent more time at mama @ablaelmowafy’s home .. she made me feel like I had family in a country I knew very little about ❤️🥰😘

I was always surrounded with the most wonderful human beings in Egypt

one of my good friends from @auc_egypt later became a designer @__mamzi__ and you can see one of her beautiful designs in the artwork for my song “the village is watching”

..and it seems I like to keep a white cat by my side.. this is Brincessa Yasmina formerly known as Brince.. (there was some confusion at the vet 👀😅)

I was invited to write a song dedicated to this beautiful bride, and performed it at the most gorgeous Egyptian wedding ceremony!

I also had the pleasure of soaking in inspiration from @beyonce while living in Egypt..

..and of course I kissed the sphinx ;)

I didn’t know it then, but my time in Egypt, would shape so much of the rest of my life

you’ll hear Arabic language woven throughout my album, and I hope that, even if you don’t understand the words, you will feel them.

I’d seen @leilalisjak’s work months before I finally messaged her.. I was nervous to ask, but with only a week left before leaving Slovenia ..and not knowing if I’d return.. I knew I had to..

my album was written, recorded, and inspired in Slovenia, and if visuals were going to accompany it, I needed to push through my nerves and press send..

Leila was so gracious and agreed to meet to discuss the possible collaboration.. we clicked immediately, sharing the same approach to photography.. capturing moments, telling a story..

a few days later, we met for the shoot, supported by @dashabezjak @lea.bole @igovibes and Leila’s thoughtfully curated vision for the locations and moments we wanted to capture..

it was the day before I would fly out of Slovenia.. I should have been flustered..

Leila’s calm, quiet confidence put me at ease from the very beginning.. I felt free to become whatever each moment needed to tell the story of PHASES AND REFLECTION 🙏🏼

Leila, you are one of a kind. I can’t fully express how lucky I feel to have had the opportunity to work with you and tell the story of my album through your photography 🧿

Lea, Lea, Lea.. I can’t say enough about you, your talent, your friendship.. the way you supported me through so many moments throughout the past year.. what a blessing you are in my life ❤️

I want to highlight @lea.bole’s incredible artistry because I’ve honestly never felt more beautiful wearing makeup..

some of you may know that I resist makeup as much as possible, so when it came time to create visuals for my album, I knew I needed someone who could make me feel like me..

Lea not only kept my look natural, but somehow made minimal makeup feel fully glamorous.. I literally felt luminous.. which aligned perfectly with my album theme 🌔

to this day, I still have flashbacks to how I felt on shoot day 🧿

Lea, thank you for keeping me aglow ..and also for the much needed “hair check” moment 😜 .. with love always 🥰❤️🧿

I was so deep in what I was doing with my music that I didn’t realize until years later what @biggarankin00’s Duval Diamond Awards truly meant..

Bigga acknowledged my hard work, celebrated it and gave me two awards that made me feel like I had what it took to be a player in the music industry. his stamp of approval meant everything.

I always wished I’d properly thanked him.

the making of “the village is watching”

@igovibes & I make a great team 🧿

Sali played an integral role in vibe setting and inspiration

had to tap into my Arabic writing — I studied the language in 2009-10 in Egypt

the song gave flamenco energy as well, so I threw in a Spanish verse

@paul_kaleka always knocks out my mix notes like its nothing. I guess it’s easy when you get it so close with Mix 1 💪🏼
