🪩 🧧 HELP US FUND I DREAM IN COLOUR 🧧 🪩

Hey everyone, as you know we are programmed for a run at Theatre503 in October, but we need a little help with funding so we can pay all our team fairly.

I really believe that every creative artist should be fully compensated for their work, and every member of this team has worked so hard and is so brilliant.

Totally aware that times are tough right now, but we would be so so grateful for any little help you can offer. Even £5 will make such a huge difference for this run and for the future of the show.

Plus if you donate £20 or more you’ll get a personal thank you from Jasmine! 💃

Please share this crowdfunder on your socials as well so more people know about it – it would mean so much to us.

For National Poetry Day, we're throwing back to a poem by artist Jasmine Thiens, responding to Anya Gallaccio's Turner exhibition 'Preserve' (2024-25) as part of the Sowing Seeds project.

About the poet:
Jasmine Thien (she/her) is a fully blind poet, writer, actor and comedian of Southeast Asian Chinese descent. Her work often explores the nuances of the intersectional experience, drawn from her own life as a disabled and neurodivergent woman of colour.

About the project:
Sowing Seeds was a series of creative writing workshops for young people aged 11–14 and their friends and families, to explore the connections between art, nature, and self-expression. Each week introduced a new theme and poetic technique, inspired by Gallaccio's exhibition, which featured artwork crafted from organic and ephemeral materials.

The sessions were supported by Helen, a member of the gallery’s learning team and published author. From personifying the humble apple to exploring the rhythms of sonnets and drawing on memory through freewriting, the group was encouraged to be playful and curious with words.

🪙👠 Access consulting for Unfortunately at Shoreditch Town Hall 👠🪙

How do we make sure that blind audiences can access a show that is so richly, wonderfully visual? By fully embracing precise descriptions of fabric, colour and quality.

Velvet and brocade and linen, sky blue and crimson and metallic gold, fashion and fabric and colour and capitalism … truly, I was in my element with this gig. 💎

Unfortunately is running at Shoreditch Town Hall until Saturday the 26th of September. 💸 A photo of the stage pre-show. The set is made all in metallic gold including a catwalk or runway which runs all the way across the stage. In the reflection of the catwalk you can see a stage hand holding a long-handled brush and dust pan getting the space ready for the show. by @jasminethien

Performing in front of about 2,000 people at the Royal Festival Hall as a visibly blind actor of colour – dancing, speaking, taking up space carrying my long white cane, showing that marginalised bodies deserve to claim the spotlight on the largest stages, was truly a huge privilege. 🙏

In a time when I experience constant dissociation, anxiety and disconnection from my body, being on stage is the one place where I feel simultaneously the most grounded and in flight. 🦢

Thank you to the National Youth Theatre for inviting me, and thank you to all my fellow actors. Devising a show in less than two weeks using text provided by some big celebrities without the opportunity to rehearse anything with them before hand was quite the ambitious project, but we pulled it off. 🫶 The entire cast of 83 young people spread across an enormous stage, all facing stage right, leaning forward and reaching towards something precious in a distance. The stage is bathed in white and blue lighting and a large screen at the back of the stage shows a live feed of India Amarteifio reading her letter. taken in Royal Festival Hall - Southbank Centre by @jasminethien

When you’ve had a long day of rehearsals and your spouse arrives to surprise you with flowers just because. Don’t know what I’ve done to deserve this person 😭❤️

Also, referring to them as my spouse still feels so weird 🥲 Jasmine and Grant smiling together on a street outside the rehearsal venue. Jasmine is in her wheel chair, dressed in a pink t-shirt and blue jeans, holding two bouquets of pink and white flowers (mostly chrysanthemums). Grant leans towards her with their arm around her, dressed in a off-white zip up fleece, jeggings and checkered vans. by @jasminethien

🌳 Back at The Globe to access consult for As You Like It 🌳

Disguises, love squares, and some incredibly raunchy comic characters. What’s not to love? 🤡

Especially proud of Gracie who plays Celia with so much humour, heart and joy. 🫶 A photo from backstage. Clothing rails crammed with period costumes, including a dusty pink ballgown, an icy blue dress, and a red and gold number, all richly embroidered in brocade. by @jasminethien

When you’re one of 80 odd young people prepping to share the stage with some really famous people who were somehow once in the same position as you.

Grateful to have been invited by the National Youth Theatre to join the devising company for Letters to My Youngr Future Self.

Pop down to the Southbank Centre this Sunday evening if you’re inclined to see some classic NYT shenanigans. I am told there will be some genuine superstars making an appearance too. Jasmine speaks into a handheld microphone with fellow cast members around her paying attention by @jasminethien

Last night, Grant had a fall, injuring their left foot. We hoped it would recover overnight, but I woke up to Grant scooting themselves around in my wheelchair.

We had a hilarious time working out how to travel to the hospital. Grant directed, I pushed, and our one and only incident was me crashing them foot-first into a public bin. I count that a successful journey. 😂

Bless them, the medical staff tried their best not to be entertained by the couple with one partner unable to walk and the other unable to see, until we gave them permission to laugh. 🤣

Turns out, Grant has a fracture that can take up to 3 months to fully heal, and they will now be using a boot and crutch.

As I was wheeling Grant backwards out of the doctor’s office, I was reminded of something I have said to many people when I talk about disability:

All of us, if we live long enough, will experience disability in some form.

Maybe by accident or injury.

Or by illness.

Or simply by old age.

Yes, Grant’s disability is temporary, but their injury from falling barely a metre or two outside our building highlighted to me the very thin line between abled and disabled.

The human body is a wonderful and miraculous thing.

But it is also incredibly fragile.

And we are very good at believing that fragility does not apply to us. Until it does.

Right now, our household contains one orthopaedic boot, one crutch, one wheelchair, half a dozen canes, and no less than 3 pairs of prosthetic eyes. 🙋‍♂️

And Grant will doubtless need help over the next few months that they are not used to receiving.

But between us, I suspect we’ll construct one approximally functional human. 😂 A cropped portrait photo of Grant. They are holding a grey crutch on their left, and their left foot is strapped firmly inside an orthopaedic boot. They are dressed in a silver, geometrically patterned polo shirt, white jeggings and black-and-white checkered socks. by @jasminethien
