Yesterday this beautiful soul, my sister, Sheila, would have turned 54 years old. To me, she’s frozen in time as a 40-something, since she never made it to her 5th decade. I know it sounds selfish to say that I’ll never understand it, and that I’ll certainly never get over it since Sheila’s absence from this world is felt far and wide. I’m well aware that I’m not the only one longing for her presence. I found this picture the other day, and felt it was the perfect image to post for a few reasons. The expression captured here shows her relationship with Michael. They were siblings, neither one remembering life without the other. Mike and Sheils were best friends, partners in crime, keepers of secrets, supporters of one another, and shared more glances/eye rolls/inside jokes than anyone. Watching them together always brought me all the feels. They were truly a superlative duo. This picture was taken about a month before we learned that Sheila was sick—just prior to her breast cancer diagnosis. She wears a wonderfully genuine smile and a perfectly carefree look that can’t be beat. This brief moment exudes happiness, love, warmth, and comfort. Taken at Dode’s 70th birthday celebration, it was a special evening filled with family and framily (friends who are family). Sheila delighted in connections and relationships, and was thrilled to celebrate her mom. The two of us had the best time planning that party, a priceless memory for me. One of manyyyyyyyyy. The second picture posted here shows our annual tradition of celebrating Sheila’s birthday with mudslides as we recall favorite stories with love and light. She would absolutely love it, just as we all love her so much. We miss her even more. Please continue to send positive vibes to her family, Jason, Jude, and Elle. She would be so proud each one of the Bernards. Please send love for the moms, Dode and Jan, and for Michael, Tim, Brendan, and me. Congratulations to Elle! 10 years @thewaverlyschool - with the most supportive and loving community of educators, families and friends we could have ever asked for. New adventures ahead for High School @csartssgv where dreams will be chased and fully realized by this kind, intelligent, loving, funny, driven, and talented Middle School graduate.
