The Museum of Roadside Art celebrates the Showa era, outsider art, kitsch, and subcultural relics. Opened in October 2022 by editor and photographer Kyoichi Tsuzuki, to preserve the relics of closing hihōkan. (treasure houses), roadside attractions, often combining bawdy humor, folklore, science fiction and erotic art. While most have closed, the genre emerged from a long cultural history of Edo-period shunga (erotic art) and rural fertility shrines, later fading due to changing social tastes, stricter regulations, and the internet.

Phosphene Dream Machine

Phosphene Dream Machine is a sensory exploration drawn from processed television white noise and stroboscopic flicker. Inspired by the original Dreamachine developed by Brion Gysin and Ian Sommerville, the work uses pulsating light to stimulate the optic nerve, activating the brain’s natural rhythms. This neurological interaction gives rise to kaleidoscopic patterns and visual hallucinations.

Showing at Home@735 Gallery, 735 Bourke Street Redfern, opening Wednesday the 14th May from 6-8pm
