I keep thinking that there’s some pathway for me to follow. In painting. In life. But sometimes I’m brought back to my senses by the truth that there is no path. I return often to the idea of Antonio Machado’s poem where he says ‘Pathmaker, there is path. You make the path by walking. By walking, you make the path’. This is what I’m reaching for. Evidence that the work is the path, rather than guided by one. Signs of the struggle that comes with a journey worth undertaking. Scars and dings. The irony is that “evidence of the path” almost never survives if you’re trying to preserve it. It shows up when you’re willing to risk ruining the painting—when decisions are made without knowing if they’ll work, and you don’t immediately clean them up. Antonio Machado wasn’t offering a comforting metaphor so much as a hard constraint: there is no pre-existing structure to lean on. The only evidence that a path exists is the traces left behind. ——————- ‘𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴’ 𝗔𝗰𝗿𝘆𝗹𝗶𝗰, 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁, 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝟯𝟲 𝘅 𝟯𝟲 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 ———————— #interiordesign #abstractpainting #design #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting by @jason_zahn_

I’m always searching for the ephemeral—the fleeting, elusive qualities of a place or a moment that seem to exist somewhere between memory, imagination, and lived experience. They may not exist in any literal sense, yet I believe that if we allow ourselves to believe in them, they can become as real as anything we know. Somewhere beyond the reach of thought, your dream already exists. It waits there, already formed, for you to discover its path and set it in motion. Time is a thief, but also a giver. Everything before us is waiting to be recognized, waiting for us to pay full attention. Waiting for us to realize that all these little things are our life—not inconveniences on the way to something better. Maybe painting is a way of paying that attention. A way of lingering in the space between what is and what might be, long enough for something previously unseen to come to the surface. Maybe the places we imagine are not entirely separate from the places we inhabit, and that the act of looking—of really looking—might reveal something that was there all along. ——————————- ‘Dreamwalker in the Night Garden’ Acrylic, crayon, pencil, spray paint 12x12 ply panel ©️2026 by @jason_zahn_
