idk what this grid is called or if it even has a proper name; i just thought it was a cool concept and tried it. gridding tenuto press buzzes over a bed of triplet roll

1: 150 bpm - first bar was slow and could definitely feel some diddles getting tight and/or thin. far from perfect but you get the idea
2: a + b = c
a = triplet roll with triplet grid tenuto bumps
b = press buzz triplet grid
c = the thing

now that indoor season’s over…

progress > perfection, so here’s something really different from what i’ve posted in the past.

1: chutichuh grid @ 160 bpm (natural decay feel) - we played this at bdb camp and it feels good. lots of open flams in this rep
2: flam drag grid @ 180 bpm - saw @laurenthirakata play it and wanted to give it a shot. drag interp inconsistent especially in third pattern

2023 Boston Crusaders Snare Feature

finally getting around to posting this video from a couple weeks ago. tbh this excerpt was surprisingly easy to learn. it’s also a lot of fun to play

- a couple double strokes in the couple bars after the decel. were crushed and muddy
- my decrescendo dotted eighth notes were always fast, have to hold onto those just a bit more. and i didn’t have to go to the edge on the second set of them
- the first paradiddle was bad
- the last couple beats of flam bar got slightly ahead and popped out of the sound a bit
- heights could def be better in the paradiddlediddles in the last bar

Carolina Crown 2023 Part 4 Chunk

i’m loving the style the new staff has brought to crown’s percussion. saw this chunk super early season and knew i wanted to learn it. not a great rep tho rip

- the beginning phrase isn’t good. quarter note triplets at the edge started slow and wasn’t patient enough with the threes
- the first big prep left hand was really late. getting those big floats to stay in time is something i need to work on
- roll heights were all over the place in the beginning of the hit, working on bringing those down
- the accented triplet was a bit fast in measure 82
- i think the ninelet rhythm at the end is so cool

Broken City Percussion 2023 Snare Break

i really liked this break from this past season, it’s gotta be my new fav bcp break. i loved the split shots and the rimshot roll was so fresh! there are multiple transcriptions out there, but the sheets i put in the video was just what i used.

- the 5-stroke was so early. my single biggest gripe with this rep *sigh* 😓
- the most popular version of the transcription is with a 7let nested in a quarter note triplet. in practice, that is how i thought of it and played it
- the ending always bugged me. the singles are definitely not the same speed all the way through, so not just 5lets. but playing the 3-3-4 9let as written also doesn’t feel right. so i think it’s the latter option but slurred a little, blending the two hand speeds together

Hollywood - Dark Sky Percussion 2023

happy fourth! here’s a cool spree that is not just a spree but also singles and doubles and backsticks and stuff. fun to learn and play tho! thanks @mangeeezy for the sheets

- my heights are super uneven in the singles phrase, my right tends to be higher. will be working balancing out the heights between hands
- grace notes got pretty high especially in the middle of the exercise
- i can’t really play all the backsticks in the last bar 🥲

Pulse Percussion 2022 Closer Snare Break

this was such a cool break from a really great show. i enjoyed learning it last year. pulse likes to do little stick tricks everywhere which can look pretty sick, although yes i know the sheets from learn the beats aren’t accurate with the stick tricks lol

- it might not look like it but that pancake in the very beginning was so hard. like so fast. it was really difficult to get back around to play the shot and swisses cleanly
- i played the right hand flam in bar 35 more like a left hand flam oops
- end of bar 41 and beginning of bar 42 got a bit muddy this rep because i let go of my left a bit too much after the rim side swipe. so the flam of the second same hand flam drags got wide
- it actually took me so so so long to be able to play bar 48 at tempo. my left hand wouldn’t be able to go from the first to second 4-let grouping in that bar. but it’s very cool

Spree - Pulse Percussion 2022

getting a couple of posts out of the way before newer things. i learned this a while back with the freestyle rudiments video on yt.

- inner notes got high especially in the middle of the exercise
- it was a little hard to get accurate and consistent triplet/sextuplet timing at the backstick. i would often play the backstick on early
- this rep even the two left diddles that follow the backstick were slightly early. had a tendency to use too much arm for those
- i found the turnaround after the hi-mom to be quite quick. getting those lefts took some effort

RCC Indoor 2015 Closer Snare Feature

i finally got around to recording this since i’m on spring break. i first heard this lick in the RCC 2021 Tribute video but i didn’t realize that it came from this show until much later. it’s very well-written and i love the adam watts vocals (in an rcc show!!)

- first buzz was a bit early oops
- going for the same stylization as rcc in the video, i should’ve prepped the right hand for the decrescendo triplet roll
- rushed the last eighth note space at the end of the 5th bar causing the big left flam to be slightly early
- the diddle before the hi-mom was a bit slurred, turning the beat of triplet with a diddle on the last partial into a bit of a weird sixteenth note rhythm. the hi-mom was pretty hard to get in time as it is pretty quick
- a little fast on the decrescendo to edge eighth notes. need to control those more
- the end of the triplets and paradiddlediddles section got a little fast so i adjusted by slowing down on the accented eighth note triplet
