After a week of reflection, my heart is still filled with so much gratitude & joy. Last Saturday, my students stepped onto the stage at Rose Hall and laid it all out. They played with passion, purpose & soul. They told their story and left it all on the stage. In the end, we walked away with 1st place!!! If you had told me five years ago that this would be my life today, I wouldn’t have been able to comprehend the blessing. Seeing the overwhelming joy in my students’ eyes & faces lets me know I’m on the right path & gives me the determination to keep moving forward. I am honored to serve these kids and my community every single day 🙏

Last night’s Gala was a huge success with Jazz & Dance closing out the show with “Alma de Fuego” (Soul on Fire) 🔥 Ms. Heugas did an absolutely amazing job on the choreography!! Also, a very special thank you to Ms. Pelfrey & her tech students for building such a beautiful stage & making the vision sound & look amazing! 🙏

HAPCO Educator Derrick Harris will be a lead clinician at Osceola County School for the Arts’ Jazz Summer Camp from June 22-26 at Gateway High School. He will instruct high school band students and teach a daily trombone master class.

Congrats to the OCSA Jazz A Band, which recently won first place at the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival in New York City. Under the direction of Jason G.M. Anderson, the band competed against 20 of the top high school jazz bands in the world. The band also won the national title in 2022 and 2023.

As an instructor of Jazz Improvisation and Lower Brass Studies, Derrick Harris’ dedication, passion and ambition is shown towards his students. He helps each pupil get better one note at a time by implementing good practice techniques, embouchure control, and the essentials of the trombone as an instrument. He is the CEO of Eighth Note Productions and a trombonist in the Dr. Phillips Jazz Orchestra. He plays many musical styles including jazz, big band, and ‘50s and ‘60s rock; Caribbean music is a specialty.

Osceola County School for the Arts (OCSA) is founded on the parallel learning and cross-disciplinary values of academic rigor and artistic enterprise. In addition to high-quality, classical training in their chosen arts area, OCSA artists develop an innovative spirit and creative confidence from collaborative inquiry and performance-based learning.

We’re headed back to the Big Apple!!! 🍎🗽

So grateful & excited to be heading back to the 2026 Essentially Ellington Competition & Festival in New York City as one of just 20 finalist bands!!

At the end of April, OCSA Jazz A students will travel to Jazz at Lincoln Center (@jazzdotorg ) to perform at the legendary “House of Swing” spending the week immersed in rehearsals, workshops, jam sessions, and performances alongside the other amazing finalist bands. They’ll also have the incredible opportunity to learn from and interact with the musicians of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.

These students work nonstop, day in and day out, to prepare for opportunities like this, and earning this invitation is only the beginning. There is still so much musical work ahead, and our focus now must remain fully on the music. To make that possible, we need our community’s help with the financial support required to get us there. What an honor to play with the inimitable Ulysses Owens Big Band this past weekend! Even more meaningful was sharing the stage with my son, two of my current students, and one of my former students — a poignant reminder of why I love doing what I do.

Being a high school and middle school jazz teacher isn’t easy. Every day, I show up trying to hold my students to a high standard and be inspiring at the same time. Some days, it feels like I’m just spinning my wheels…..but then Career Day rolls around, and I walk in to see 20 students dressed up like me — complete with Adidas & fake beards 😂…. thanks guys….it’s an honor to be your teacher 👊🙏 taken in Osceola County School For The Arts by @jasongmanderson
