Had I known number 10, I may have done it sooner!

1. You do not need the whole plan right away.

When I made the change, I had a vision for the first year, but not the second or beyond. The rest became clearer once I started moving.

2. You can love your career and still decide to change it.

I loved my work as a leader and educator. I couldn’t see how much energy the role required or how those small misalignments were increasing my stress.

3. Pay attention to which parts of the work give you energy.

What I loved most about leadership was coaching, mentoring, collaborating, and helping people understand themselves better. That gave me information about what to do next.

4. Success can make leaving harder.

A title, reputation, income, and institutional identity give you plenty of reasons to stay. I was definitely over-connected to all of these.

5. Career change includes loss.

I missed being associated with schools, students, teachers, and a world that had shaped most of my adult life. I needed time to grieve what I was leaving and celebrate where I was going.

6. Old patterns come with you.

I went back to school knowing the grade mattered far less than the learning. I still wanted every A.

7. Starting over does not erase what came before.

I use what I learned as an educator and leader every day as a therapist, coach, and yoga teacher.

8. Your next career may already be hiding inside your current one.

The parts of leadership I loved most are still the parts of my current work that I love most.

9. You may have to release things you genuinely value.

I gave up income, certainty, status, title, and reputation. I had to build a new community in a different context.

10. A career change can change the rest of your life too.

I have more time now. I work for myself. I own a business. I take more frequent vacations. I have more room to be myself.

The question isn’t just, “Which Bhagavad Gītā translation should I read?”

It’s also, “What am I hoping this translation will help me do?”

Here’s one way I think about it:

📖 Reading for the story
The Bhagavad Gita — Eknath Easwaran
A clear introduction to the text, its characters, and its central themes.

🪷 Reading for contemplation
Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation — Stephen Mitchell
A literary translation that invites slow reading and reflection.

🙏 Reading for practice
The Bhagavad-Gita: A New Translation — Georg Feuerstein
For readers interested in how the Gītā informs yoga as a lived discipline.

📚 Reading for study
Bhagavad Gita — Graham Schweig
Thoughtful notes, careful attention to Sanskrit, and a rich resource for deeper study.

🔍 Reading for scholarship
The Bhagavad Gita — Winthrop Sargeant
A reference edition with Sanskrit, transliteration, and grammatical analysis for readers who want to work closely with the text.

None of these replaces the others.

Each invites a different relationship with the same conversation.

Which translation would you add to the list?

Therapy won’t make life easier or guarantee happiness.

But you may begin to recognize old patterns, say what you’ve been holding back, and question expectations you’ve spent years trying to meet.

Therapy can help you make choices that reflect who you are and the life you want to live.

Igniting the Spirit begins with the breath. In Yoga Sūtras II.52–53, Patañjali describes how prāṇāyāma weakens the covering that obscures our inner light and prepares the mind for concentration.

The light is already present. Practice creates the conditions for us to recognize it.

1️⃣ Breath opens the doorway

Prāṇāyāma connects physical practice with inner awareness.

2️⃣ Stillness reveals

As breath and mind settle, deeper awareness emerges.

3️⃣ The veil lifts (II.52)

Prāṇāyāma weakens what obscures our inner light.

4️⃣ Awareness transforms

Recognizing our true nature changes how we experience ourselves and the world.

5️⃣ Attention becomes possible (II.53)

The mind becomes fit for sustained concentration.

6️⃣ Breath leads inward

Prāṇāyāma prepares us for meditation.

7️⃣ Ignition is revelation

We do not manufacture the spirit. We uncover what is already present.

Creating sacred space marks a threshold crossing from one kind of experience to another.

Jonah’s practice of beginning each session seated quietly at the front of the room immediately changed the quality of the space.

He wasn’t just creating sacred space. He was demonstrating how to enter it.

A shift into deeper awareness. A call, a quieting, a presence. An invitation to settle into the moment. To become more aware of ourselves, the space, and one another.

And for me personally, it marked a transition from vigilant watchfulness to quiet trust, from velocity to rest, from my ordinary experience into a sacred moment.

The practice isn’t about the body you bring to it. It’s about practicing with the body you have. 😉

Do we confuse doing yoga with experiencing a state of yoga?

Patañjali gives us hints along the way. Follow @jasonheisserer for more!

An overlooked way to find some calm or stillness in your day: listening to poetry.

Perhaps I’m biased toward the need for both though (stillness and poetry).

Who should I read next?

So incredibly grateful. 😘

Couples counseling won’t promise a perfect relationship.

There will still be disagreements, difficult conversations, misunderstandings, and moments when you struggle to understand each other.

But you may begin to recognize the patterns you repeat, talk about what you’ve been avoiding, and take responsibility for how you show up in the relationship.

And you may find yourselves better able to navigate disagreements, repair after conflict, and make decisions together.
