I last wore my dad’s robe 16 years ago for my trial sermon.
He told me, “Jay, when you preach… give it everything you got.”

It was too big then… but just right for now.

I wore it again, for his Homegoing Celebration...not as a son trying to figure it out,
but as a man standing on everything he poured into me.

Everything I am as a man is because of him.
He taught me SO many things. 🥹

I told him…
Take your rest, soldier. I got it from here.

He taught me enough...
To see him again in peace. 🙏🏾

Before he ever handed me a mic, he taught me how to use it.
Before I got married, he taught me the weight of covenant.
Before I became a dad, he taught me the value of time.
Before I was anything, Dad was there, telling me about EVERYTHING.

His motto was always, "Jay, you may not need this now, but one day you'll look back and say, Dad was right."

Dad was right about a lot of things 😂
I just wish I could tell him.

His lessons are still loud in my ears, especially this one:
"I've taught you enough to stay with God. The rest is on you, Jay."

I'm grateful for a father's wisdom. And I'm still carrying it.

My fellow Fathers, what you pour in now, they'll hear later.💪🏾

Hey, STOP APOLOGIZING.

You no longer have permission to apologize for being God’s choice.

The crowd could tolerate Jesus preaching to Zacchaeus, even correcting him. But when Jesus chose to sit at HIS table, they grumbled.

They had already decided who deserved proximity to Jesus.

But the one they thought Jesus should avoid was the one His MISSION required Him to pursue.

People may know your history and question why God chose you, but they don’t get to veto the choice of God. 🙌🏾🙌🏾

Stop shrinking. Stop over-explaining. Stop apologizing for grace you could never earn.

Discipleship creates confident leaders.. 💪🏾

Confident leaders create rest. 🙌🏾

Rest creates margin and that’s where vision is born. 🌎

If you can trust God with the uncertainty, maybe He’ll trust you to steward the future. 💪🏾🙏🏾

Five days before my father received his eternal reward 👑(I’m learning to rejoice even in the grief), he told me something he had repeated since I graduated high school:

“Jay, it’s going to take another man to take you where I can’t take you.”

Then he said, “Stay with your Apostle, son. He’s a good man. He can take you where I can’t.”

He had no idea how prophetic those words would become.

The day my father passed, as I sat preparing to look over the notes for his eulogy, my Apostle called me into his office, laid hands on me, and prayed for me. This picture has become a reminder that even in pain, God gives grace to carry what He has entrusted to us, even when IT hurts.

“Guard the good deposit entrusted to you…” 2 Timothy 1:14

I’m grateful for a father who was selfless enough to point me toward another father...one who could continue to impart, train, disciple, and equip me for the work of ministry. (Dad never got to meet Apostle Clack, but I’m sure he knew him by the Spirit)

I’m Grateful for the lessons. Grateful for the impartation. Grateful for the grace to carry the legacy!

It takes a little more effort to smile these days, but I’m choosing joy, even when the tears come without warning.

There’s so much to be grateful for, yet every day I’m reminded that my Dad isn’t here to share in these priceless moments. Somehow, though, I feel like I’m learning him even more now. I remember the lessons. The “Son, when you have a family…” talks. The “Jay, read this book, you’ll need it one day” moments.

I’m limping, but I’m learning to embrace the limp. Still moving forward. Still loving the greatest person I could ever do life with, @alonacharmaine. Still doing my best to be the father my children need, while carrying the example my Dad gave me as a Black man, father, pastor, jack of all trades, and a man full of joy and life.

Some days the smile comes easy. Other days, I have to choose it.

Either way, I’m still choosing joy. ✌🏾 by @javanarmour
