Former three-term U.S. Virgin Islands senator | Strategic advisor

October 1, 1878 represents Contract Day and the beginning of the St. Croix Labor Uprising, commonly called the Fireburn.

Emancipation had happened (July 3, 1848), but economic control remained.

That is why this history still matters 148 years later.

Legal freedom means little when people remain trapped by the conditions under which they must live and work.

During my time in the Legislature, I proposed and sponsored Bill No. 34-0146 and gained the support of colleagues who signed on to the measure. It was ultimately enacted as Act No. 8543, recognizing the Fireburn Queens and the estate laborers who stood for human rights and better working conditions.

A special thank you to Dr. Edward Browne, Frandelle Gerard, Ms. Chenzira Davis-Kahina, and everyone who contributed to building this legislative record and preserving this important part of our history.

October 1 should be more than a remembrance of what happened.

It should remind us that progress must create a real opportunity for people to work, provide for their families, build stability, and live with dignity.

We remember the Queens. We honor the laborers. And we carry the lesson forward.
