A few new additions to the studio👀

This Macro filter from @prismlensfx is a beast for up close detail shots and any other macro photography you might be interested in!

One thing I haven’t seen anyone mention though is the focus.
The magnification the filter gives, also makes your depth of focus super shallow, here’s a few tips to help with that:

1) Use a tripod! Might be fairly intuitive, but the stability you get from a tripod means you have all the time you need to absolutely nail that focus, making your shots that much sharper!
2) Move the subject not the lens. Couldn’t explain why it is but I found much more success in moving the subject into focus rather than pulling focus to the subject for those tight micro adjustments, might just be a skill issue, but I would recommend trying to move the subject yourself as well!
3) Set up some lighting! You were probably already gonna do those, but it is crucial! You’re going to want to use a super tight aperture around F8–13 to get anything more than a millimeter of focus and the light needed to do that won’t just happen on accident!

365 days of shooting later! Over all the time that’s past there’s a few consistent lessons that have been drilled into my photography, swipe through and learn from my experience!

And if you’ve been shooting this year, what have you learned in your time?

EMOTION OVER EVERYTHING.
If deliver perfect framing, solid color, and high resolution, you’re on par with ai. One of the most important fundamentals it can’t deliver is emotion.

Let subject do the talking.
You don’t always need flashy scenes or crazy lighting, let the subject give the photo meaning.

You can ALWAYS find a smaller subject to shoot.
City > Street > Sidewalk > Garden > Flower.
And you can apply this to just about anything you come across! Food, Fashion, Events, the list goes on!

People want to see everything.
You just gotta show them.

And people want to be seen.
Let them show you!

Photos don’t have to be obvious.
Sometimes it good to let it hold you for a second, the subject doesn’t have to jump at you every time. The experience of a photo shouldn’t always just be looking sometimes thinking is the key to the frame.

Shadows have color.
Black is boring. Sometimes at least, adding color to shadows is an easy way to instantly add depth and emotion to an otherwise unremarkable scene. Greens and blues are often a good starting point!

Capture the in betweens.
Every photographer shoots the main events, but a lot of the story lies in the passing moments. Don’t let yourself blend into the crowd and lose the story.

Far away is for observing an action.

Close up is for engaging with an action.

Break your highlights, crush your shadows.
As long as it’s intentional, it can add to your photos instead of destroying them!

A prop tells you more about someone than a face.
Portraits aren’t headshots. Know the difference and tell your audience about the people not about their skin care routine.

Remove the distractions.
A simple scene is a clear story. A convoluted shot is a sure fire way to lose the someone’s attention.

Find the right time.
Not a second too early, not a second too late. Moments pass and if you miss your chance you often won’t get another. Time yourself with movements and actions and trust by @javaz.22
