Javett-UP is excited to announce ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™๐™๐™š๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฎ, a solo exhibition by artist and cosmo-technologist, Kamil Adam Hassim, opening this September.

Kamilโ€™s practice operates at the intersection of art, frontier science, and indigenous knowledge systems. His work investigates how different cultural and technological frameworks produce different realities and the social, technological, and spiritual possibilities they offer.

At the heart of the exhibition is ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™๐™๐™š๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฎ, a working particle detector driven by a mythological family of string instruments known as the Sutras. Designed to reconnect audiences with lost ancestral languages and reawaken the forgotten voices and songs of the universe, the instrument responds to cosmic rays- ancient beams of energy from outer space that constantly bombard the earth.

Through science, mythology, sound, and technology, ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™๐™๐™š๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฎ becomes an extension of our senses, a thread of connecting us to ancient cosmic voices that continue to resonate all around us.

๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™๐™๐™š๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฎ is curated by our Interim Curatorial Director Storm Janse van Rensburg and Javett-UPโ€™s curatorial team.

Visit between Tuesday to Saturday and the last Sunday of every month (10:00am - 16:00pm) to view the exhibition. Bookings open on Webtickets.

From 17 September, Javett-UP is proud to present ๐™‹๐™–๐™จ๐™จ๐™–๐™œ๐™šโ€”๐™– ๐™จ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™œ, a travelling, collaborative photographic exhibition by Berlin-based artists Akinbode Akinbiyi (UK/Nigeria) and Abrie Fourie (South Africa), whose work explores the connections between photography, sound, and political imagination.

Developed during a residency in Burkina Faso, West Africa, in 2021, the body of work emerged from the photographersโ€™ movements in the streets of the capital Ouagadougou and the surrounding landscapes of Oubritenga Province during a period of growing political uncertainty in the country.

With a shared investigation into place, memory, and listening, both artists work independently yet in conversation with one another to capture the visual and acoustic landscapes they find themselves in. Their photographs turn to the quieter details of daily life, revealing the everyday rhythms that shape the environments they pass through, evoking traces of cultural memory, the enduring legacy of Thomas Sankara, and collective histories that continue to resonate today.

Visit us between Tuesday to Saturday and the last Sunday of every month (10:00am - 16:00pm) to view the exhibition. Bookings open on Webtickets

At Javett-UP, access to arts education is important to our work, and we are committed to creating opportunities for all young people to engage with the arts. With the support of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), we were able to extend this opportunity to deserving children from two Pretoria-based organisations: Kingdom Life Child & Youth Centre in Saulsville and Give Them Hope Care Centre in Nellmapius, who participated in our Bokamoso Holiday Art Programme last week.

We were also honoured to welcome representatives from the Canadian High Commission during the programme. Their visit highlighted the impact of this partnership in expanding access to arts education and cultural learning opportunities for young people.

Thank you to CFLI, facilitators, parents, guardians, and homes who made the week what it was. We look forward to welcoming you back in December!

On 16 September, we gathered for the opening of ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™๐™๐™š๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฎ, an exhibition by artist and cosmo-technologist Kamil Adam Hassim, curated by Javett-UP Interim Curatorial Director Storm Janse van Rensburg and the Javett-UP curatorial team.

Part instrument, part particle detector, ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™๐™๐™š๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฎ is driven by the Sutras, a mythological family of string instruments tuned to the traces left when cosmic rays strike our atmosphere. Each time one does, the Sutras sing. String Theory offers a thread back to ancestral language and the voices that are being forgotten.

Hassim works at the intersection of art, science, and indigenous knowledge systems, examining how different cultural and technological frameworks produce distinct realities.

The evening offered space for dialogue, curiosity, and connection. We extend our sincere gratitude to the colleagues, friends, and fellow creatives who joined us, and to the individuals and partner organisations whose generous support made this exhibition possible.

The exhibition invites slow looking and deep listening. We welcome you to visit the Javett Art Centre and experience the work at your own pace.

Visit us between Tuesday to Saturday and the last Sunday of every month (10:00am - 16:00pm). Bookings open on Webtickets (link in bio).
We look forward to welcoming you to the space.

Happy World Teachersโ€™ Day!

Today, we celebrate the educators who inspire curiosity, nurture creativity, and shape the future of our society. Teachers play a vital role not only in developing knowledge and critical thinking, but also in fostering imagination, empathy, and cultural understanding through the arts.

At Javett-UP, we are proud to stand with teachers by creating opportunities for professional development, creative learning, and arts education. Through our teacher training programmes, educators gain practical tools, resources, and confidence to bring art into their classrooms, helping learners engage with history, culture, identity, and the world around them in meaningful ways.

We are especially grateful for the support of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) by High Commission of Canada in South Africa -Haut-commissariat du Canada en Afrique du Sud, whose partnership has enabled us to expand the reach and impact of our teacher development initiatives, empowering educators to inspire the next generation of creative and critical thinkers.

To all teachers: thank you for your dedication, passion, and the countless ways you enrich lives every day. Your work extends far beyond the classroom and helps build a more thoughtful, creative, and connected society.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our former Interim Chief Executive Officer, Dr Samuel Isaacs, who passed away on Thursday, 1 October 2026.

Dr Isaacs served as Interim CEO of Javett-UP from April 2020 to February 2021, having previously held the position of Director of Administration and Operations. His appointment came at a pivotal moment in the institutionโ€™s history. Barely a year after opening its doors in 2019, Javett-UP was forced to close for six months as South Africa entered a national lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Leading a young institution through a period of unprecedented uncertainty, Dr Isaacs provided steady guidance during Javett-UPโ€™s formative years. He played a critical role in establishing operational and governance structures that continue to support the Art Centre today. His leadership helped Javett-UP navigate the disruption of the pandemic and reopen to the public in September 2020.

Describing himself as โ€œan adult educator at heartโ€, Dr Isaacs believed deeply in the transformative power of learning. This philosophy aligned closely with Javett-UPโ€™s vision of creating meaningful encounters between art, education and society. He understood art centres and museums as places of discovery, dialogue and knowledge-sharing, where people from diverse backgrounds could engage with ideas, histories and creative expression.

Dr Isaacs' contribution extended far beyond Javett-UP. He was the owner and director of Longstreet Art Lovers, Chairperson of the Pretoria Arts Association, and Chairperson of the Independent Quality Assurance Agency, among numerous other professional and community commitments. Through these roles, he championed the arts, education and institutional development, leaving a lasting impact across multiple sectors.

The Board, management and staff of Javett-UP extend their heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and all who were touched by his life and work. Dr Isaacs will be remembered as a thoughtful leader, educator and advocate for access to culture and learning. His contribution to the early growth of Javett-UP will be remembered with gratitude and respect. by @javett_up
