Mercury, 2026

For over a decade, I’ve worked as an audiovisual technician, installing and troubleshooting electronic systems for art institutions and commercial clients. Mercury extends this experience into an investigation of technological failure, control, and the limits of a system’s intended function.

Created without source footage or image-generating software, the video uses a hardware-based feedback loop of modified digital devices. Rather than composing images directly, I manipulate the conditions under which they are generated, allowing the instability of the hardware to shape their form.

I’m harnessing obsolete technology to craft a unique texture lexicon. In this 2-channel experiment, I focus on “white noise” generated from analog videos, particularly VHS. CH1 employs a JVC BR-S822U, while CH2 uses a Sharp VC-H810, both connected to an Edirol V-4 Mixer. The project showcases deliberately degraded and corrupted tape sections.

Estoy aprovechando la obsolescencia de equipos análogos para trabajar texturas con múltiples canales de video. En este caso me concentro en el “ruido blanco” generadas a partir de cintas corruptas/degradadas de VHS. CH1 emplea un JVC BR-S822U, mientras que CH2 usa un Sharp VC-H810, ambos conectados a un mixer Edirol V-4 y capturadas con un Canopus ADVC-100 a Final Cut 7. taken in DUMBO, Brooklyn by @javierlmaria
