Sneak peak: the camera dollies in — He sits alone at his desk writing a letter.

It was no easy task to get lights behind this extraordinarily tight space. We had to shoot a silhouette and had no way to control house lights. The only solution was to overpower them with all the muscle we had available.

There was about a foot of space at most between the wall and the windows. @bradleyfarrell crushed it solo. Thanks brother!

INT. AMY’S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Getting into the writer’s lair, we wanted it to feel like a cocoon where the painstaking writing process happens in the dead of night.

We had a high page count and several montage pieces to shoot in this location, so I was going for a simple, but controlled approach so that we could easily dial in different looks to cover multiple scenes with Amy in her dimly lit space.

@hiramborges.dp knew exactly what to do. We tented the balcony to shoot day-for-night and spent two days filming in Amy’s apartment.

INT. GIOVANNI’S RESTAURANT - NIGHT

The last week of the film, we shot overnights in Cardiff, Wales at @giovannisinthebay Italian restaurant — sublime food only matched by the hospitality. The space was V-shaped, and surrounded by windows which ended up being very useful, showing street lights in the background and car headlights moving around behind the actors in the close up shots. I built the lighting plan using the orange neon lights as a base, and enhanced them with @asteraofficial Titan tubes. I really loved how deep the orange played into the scene. Our lighting set up for the table scene was built with Litemats, Titans, and a bounce. Simple, moody, and lit both actors well :)

INT. PATRICK’S OFFICE - DAY

This Location proved to be a bit of a challenge — we were filming on the second floor of this loft apartment with no exterior access to control the light. We ended up leaning into the existing sun direction, managing the natural light, and enhancing it to create an image that evolved with the script.

I loved the result. I think it gave Amy the feeling of apprehension as she steps out of her comfort zone for the first time.

Grateful doesn’t even begin to express how I feel about Bravado. I dreamed of making films that connect with people and to see this movie get the recognition it deserves is an amazing feeling.

I’m a self-taught cinematographer who emulated the DPs that I looked up to — I had no idea what I was doing when I started, but just kept going. The “young Javier” who was crippled with fear is smiling really, really big today. by @javierruizdp
