What if ‘Turn The Lights Off’ was written by @badomensofficial ? 👁️🩸

This viral track by @kato_music has been stuck in my head for days, but it needed a heavier twist. So, I dragged it into the darkness to create this metalcore cover reimagining. Hopefully, Jon Hamm would approve of this breakdown.

This is what @headonoficial “Dogma” breakdown sounded like 67 days before it was released.

28th February 2026.

I was halfway through the mix when I grabbed my phone, recorded the drums, bass and guitars coming straight through the studio monitors and sent the video to the guys on WhatsApp.

“La mezcla en crudo está sonando potente.” (The rough mix is sounding powerful)

Their responses:

Andrés: “Jajajaja qué locura!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥” (LOL that’s crazy!!!)
Rubén: “Wakaleeeeee”
Sergio: “Buassssaaa”

67 days later, “Dogma” was out.

I stripped this modern metal mix down to stock Reaper + free JSFX to find out what my sound actually depends on.

I use paid plugins all the time. That’s exactly why I wanted to take them away.

One rule: stock Reaper plugins and free JSFX only. No reaching for the tools I normally rely on when I already know what I want them to do.

And that was the uncomfortable part.

Taking away familiar tools exposed a few habits I didn’t realise I’d built. Suddenly I had to stop thinking in plugin names and go back to the actual problem in front of me:

What am I hearing?
What needs to change?
And how do I get there with what I’ve got?

The goal wasn’t to prove that paid plugins are useless. They’re not.

It was to see whether I could still build a brutal, modern and competitive metal mix when the tools changed.

Full mix. Drums. Bass. Guitars. Vocals.
Same sections, level matched, with the processing being bypassed on screen.

The plugin was never the point.

Si esto le ha pasado a tu banda, mándaselo a quien lleva las revisiones con el ingeniero.

«Que la caja pegue más.»

Lo has escrito. Yo lo he leído mil veces. Y es una frase que puede significar cinco cosas distintas.

Ahí está el problema real de mezclar a distancia, y no tiene nada que ver con el oficio del que toca los faders: tú traduces lo que suena en tu cabeza a palabras, él traduce esas palabras a decisiones técnicas, y en cada paso se pierde algo. Tres rondas después, el disco está bien. Bien no es lo que tenías en la cabeza.

Por eso trabajo con @musesessions.co : revisiones en tiempo real y alta resolución. Tú en tus altavoces, yo moviendo cosas, los dos escuchando exactamente lo mismo a la vez. No hay nada que interpretar porque no hay nada que traducir. Y eso lleva siendo así desde el principio — no es novedad, es el motivo por el que monté esto.

Lo que sí es nuevo: he rehecho la web, y ahora está en español. La mayoría de mis clientes lo son. Mi web no. Llevaba demasiado tiempo pidiéndole a bandas españolas que me leyeran en inglés para luego trabajar con ellas en castellano.

Ingeniero español, estudio en Cambridge. Nadie debería elegir entre sonar al nivel de fuera y entenderse con quien mezcla su disco.

Raw vs mixed drums — same take, one side is mixed. 🔊
