Life Update to friend/fam/comrades: I finished my first week on the campaigns team at my longtime progressive-movement family, Popular Democracy (@popdemoc).

I’m very grateful and debated not posting this celebratory post given the conditions in this country and beyond, but decided to still because this is a very important moment for my life, and more so, a vehicle I will (continue) to use and develop for our working-class advancement.

I’m missing NY in ways that I can’t quite name, but I have just accepted that though I am in ATLANTA (I love this city and its people) I’m not done with NYC (how could I ever be? The people there saved my life more than once). To be continued.

Wish me luck, and better yet, if you’ve never been in a political org, ask me about getting involved.

-p.s. though I missed my chance to see Evanescence live (again), I have to say, my parasocial appreciation of this band is enflamed given the release time-line, title, the political-spiritual-emotional dimensions & themes, their latest album “SANCTUARY,” has been the musical highlight of my Summer, alongside my ongoing musical journey ( yes my chord progressions need more depth; “I’m workin onit!”- in my best exaggerated NYer accent.) ❤️‍🔥 taken in Atlanta, Georgia by @jawanzajames

I’ve been feeling the creeping intensification my grief again. I’m really missing my mom: I’m okay, but a dimension of grief that I didn’t (couldn’t have truly) anticipate is the idea that maybe I’ll live a long life and it just seems not right, weird, even absurd that I would spend all those years without her. I know I’m not truly “without” her, but sometimes my grief isn’t meeting the sophistication of my spiritual understanding/faith.

My grief has been tossing me these last 12 hours and rewatching this on my flight to North Carolina for work probably wasn’t the best idea.

I think I like where this is headed though; also; yes, you’re right; this *is* the same melody (more or less) of a couple of other originals.

I’m calling it “melody-creep” and it reminds me that it’s def time to literally invest in guitar lessons/coach, and thankfully, I already have a lead to start with.

This is my original song “Under the Rubble” which I’ve shared a lot here (this isn’t my most interesting vocal performance ) but I thought that I should note:

Inspired by Palestinian Reverend Issac Munther’s 2023 Christmas Eve sermon from East Jerusalem, I wrote this song as prayer, protest, in solidarity with Palestinians, and all oppressed people. I hope that it lives on its own and is used to build community & solidarity among the working-class around the world.
