SU special education teacher candidates recently completed Managing Crisis Safely (MCS) certification led by Ronnie Adkins and Jamie Forbus of Glenwood Autism Center. MCS focuses on preventing crises whenever possible while also preparing educators to respond safely and effectively when crisis situations occur. Glenwood trainers provide MCS training to approximately 160 k-12 school systems across Alabama, and JSU is the first university to partner with Glenwood to provide this certification to teacher candidates.

One of the most powerful takeaways from the training was the idea that we can approach challenging situations with either a “closed fist” or an “open hand” attitude. Through this partnership, our SPED teacher candidates are entering the profession trained and certified to manage crises with an open hand—emphasizing prevention, safety, respect, and dignity by @jaxstateceps

Dr. Smith and five JSU special education teacher candidates attended the 2026 AT Alabama Conference, a two-day event focused on practical applications and innovations in assistive technology. The conference provided opportunities to explore AT tools and strategies that promote access, independence, and participation for individuals with disabilities.

Building on the knowledge and connections gained at the conference, we are working toward a proposal to establish an Assistive Technology Lab at JSU. The lab would provide special education teacher candidates with hands-on opportunities to explore assistive technology, better preparing them to meet the diverse needs of students in their future classrooms. by @jaxstateceps

Transition University (TU) recently welcomed 44 high school students with intellectual disabilities from six school systems to the JSU campus for a day of learning, engagement, and fun. The event brought together Jacksonville State University, area school systems, and Challenger Learning Center of Northeast Alabama to create meaningful learning experiences for students while providing valuable professional experiences for both current and future special educators.

JSU special education teacher candidates worked together to plan and lead the day from beginning to end. Their preparation included developing the instructional lesson, assigning responsibilities for welcome tables and bus duty, coordinating schedules, and planning an on-campus field trip designed to extend the learning beyond the classroom.

This TU’s lesson focused on civics, with an emphasis on voting and self-advocacy. The Leon Cole Auditorium was transformed into an interactive civic learning experience, with teacher candidates leading stations that included a simulated city council meeting, campaign speeches, community engagement activities, and mock voting. The activities gave TU students opportunities to practice making choices, expressing their opinions, and participating in their communities.

While TU students participated in their lesson and activities, their high school teachers took part in a professional development session led by Chad Strawn of Challenger Learning Center of Northeast Alabama. During the one-hour session, Strawn introduced educators to the Challenger Learning Center’s mission and worked collaboratively with the special educators to explore ways the Challenger experience could be modified and adapted to provide meaningful access for students with intellectual disabilities.

Transition University demonstrates what is possible when universities, schools, community partners, teachers, and future teachers work together. TU provides high school students with opportunities to learn and engage on a college campus, gives practicing educators access to professional development and community resources, and allows JSU teacher by @jaxstateceps
