To all dads,

Being a modern dad to a newborn isn’t easy. After the babies, mums get all the attention, and rightly so, mums are hero’s. But dads are so often overlooked. As dads, we’re ‘supposed’ to be calm and collected, in control of our emotions and should just ‘get on with it’…

As a dad, as much as you do, it never feels like it’s enough. Watching mum struggle with baby in those few weeks, you feel helpless. You can change nappies, feed baby bottles, keep things clean and tidy, but it feels like there’s nothing you can do to help alleviate the emotional changes mum is going through. And as much as you can hold, rock and feed baby, you’ll never be able to match up to the comfort and security baby gets from being in mums arms.

As you go back to work, you leave mum and baby alone to deal with their new worlds together. You struggle with trying to stay focused and give your all to work, whilst at the same time hoping that mum and baby are doing ok, checking your watch so you can get away at a decent time, not to miss bath time and get to spend time with mum and baby before hailing to go to bed and start the cycle again.

People say things like “I bet you’re happy to be at work to get a break from baby”, but in reality you’d rather be at home with them both. Those around you tell you “don’t forget to do you, don’t lose yourself, find time to do your own thing” but in reality, you ARE a new you, things are different now. Spending time with your new baby, seeing them grow and develop and learn about the world around, seeing mum hold baby with a smile, the love between them and the love they have for you, brings you more joy than anything you ‘used’ to do before.
