NEW MUSIC!! ✨

“Sleepyhead” is now streaming everywhere!! I wrote this on one of those days when life/the world/the overwhelm was making it too hard to get out of bed. I’m sure you can’t relate. It’s a super gentle feel good song to help take a step out in the right direction. I hope you listen and go touch grass. You can’t do anything unless you can get up.

A short adaptation of “Beloved” by the great Toni Morrison. I’ve recently been made aware that I haven’t tried to make enough people see this thing I’m really proud of. It also happens to be how @zenibanow and I met. We were both participating in @barsworkshop at The Public. It was put together and mentored by @rafaelcasal, @daveeddiggs, and @cookufur. Everyone was a writer/performer and we picked classics from American literature to collaborate on. Z and I were the two who picked “Beloved”. We wrote this in about 2 days and then got to collaborate with @samorapinderhughes, @msryannicole, @janellemcdrmth, @jalene1313, and @ladyzjah to bring it to life. Directed by @clopezestrada and choreographed by @cookufur. I’m so proud of it. And a few weeks later we started working together on @loopholemusical. by @jayadanaflow

It's our 10 year anniversary! Shooooocking. We got partnered up on a project at the #BARS Workshop at The Public and we've been together ever since. We have laughed til we peed, cussed each other out, almost broke up, and spent 10 years making up our favorite pieces of art. And today we launched a podcast in hopes that the fact that we make each other laugh will make you laugh. Episode 1 is out today. by @jayadanaflow

Okay Universe, put the vape down.

I grew up in a theater town. It might not be a theater town to you but it certainly was to me. And as proof of that there was The Main, a little 80 seater black box down to do weird shit. Maybe original, maybe niche, maybe Neil Simon wtv. It was a wide open accepting blank slate for anybody in it for the love of the game. And it burned down on Monday. I don't know if the city will rebuild. I had a crazy full circle moment on that stage where I got to put up a concert of "Let Me Go Kill Myself Real Quick" with and for a bunch of the people who taught me to love theater. That was a month ago. Surreal. by @jayadanaflow

Sometimes when I'm feeling despair about the decade long average development life of a musical or the death of the non-profit theatre movement in the US, I try to convince myself to stop dreaming up new musicals. I've nearly succeeded a few times. But often when I bang something smaller out, I leave my desk unsatisfied. And I think it's because I'm a context junkie .

My music brain doesn't naturally go for what's going to make you perk up on the radio or stop you mid scroll as much as I would really like it to. I hear a hook in my head and say oh man that's perfect for the mid fifties dad who still loves his ex-wife. Even when it's something dancey it's like oh perfect for the pack of soldiers who are partying because they're getting ready to die tomorrow. I think in writing this I'm discovering I might just be a bummer. The music just means so much more to me when I give it context. And when the context can then be changed and used.

I think it's something we're struggling with in the US and not just because of the rise of short form media, though it's certainly a contributor. The United States are a comparatively new collective. We don't have the centuries long shared context of a country like England and the country is so huge that local context is hard to share. And so much of the context we share is based in war or violence.

I suppose I'm rambling. But I always want to know (and tell you) WHY. Which is why I'm still writing musicals. by @jayadanaflow

It was such a pleasure to talk to the cast of The Woodsman at Street Theatre Company in Nashville. What a small world to be in California talking to a childhood friend in Nashville who's in a production of a show I co-wrote in Brooklyn a decade ago. I was shocked when MY MOM told me 😂. The Woodsman was the very first thing I ever wrote on and it taught me so much both on and off stage. When I think of that Ars Nova ANT Fest summer I think of corona and fresh grapes, hysterical laughter, and metal shavings in my floor mattress.

To me "The Woodsman" has always been about the trap of defining yourself solely by your ability, productivity and usefulness. Even though I was a Nick Chopper who would have hacked through my legs and yours to keep going. Over the past decade I have been shown over and over again by beautiful people that sometimes the thing they want most from me is just my presence. That not only is that enough, it's often preferred. I think that's the thing that makes me feel furthest from the version of myself who helped create that piece. Which I'm grateful for. by @jayadanaflow
