a cross
the heavens

falling
like a patient hammer
igniting the match between our eyes
with forgotten fireworks

a 12,000 year old migraine coming back around
in a wrecking ball

punching through
all the walls we newspapered over
the pulp pulpits, and castles of gauze
the empty words, everywhere

everything we built
to keep out the blinding truth:

we are not masters.

on one final breath

everyone you ever loved in one hand and
everything you ever knew in the other

heart counting down to zero
as the world comes rushing at you
1000-frames-a-second
recounting your story in full-throated color

in every step, every shutter
every shot you took
to tell it

so take one more for the road
and head out, head high
with one hand full of earth and
the other full of stars

And yet. Everything's right.
The floor, drumming under our feet like a heartbeat
our best moves, our unborn triumphs
calling us out in

Go.

Eyes wide open
to a future full of stars
the pulse to multiply, to reach
through the layers, find our connections
growing, ready to pop
into the next dimension.

🔥 I wish my hands were made of fire
I would plant my feet and burn
everything down

I’d take up new arms against the sky
and break the sun
make it rain diamonds and gold
food for every mouth

I wish I could see for a thousand miles
I’d reach across the ocean
with the eyes of a thief
touching, tasting, taking
what the world keeps hidden
bring back stories from the other side
find one that lets you laugh

I wish I was gone, nowhere, anywhere
but here, watching my blood dry
dark in my veins
my skin fading in the pale moonlight
an echo of an echo

I wish I could fold myself in two
and two, and two, again
I’d crease a smile where my lips were
and send them off, a happy kite
over the gray, tedious evenings
the paper-thin characters clutching at me
from books no one wants to finish

I wish I had two more wishes
I’d take you with me.

The sauce hits
the back of your throat
like fire, hot on your tongue
and you can feel the roar

pulling
at the base of your skull
bending your neck up for air, lips
twisting, licking
burning for more

hunger
eating you up inside
mouth open wide
the craving, white hot
against the black nights
of your eyes

obsessed
with the heat
you’re all claws and teeth
and hair and spit, chasing
for the last of it

kicking
to take it all
swallow the world
in the screaming rush
of fire and air, crackling
like bones between your teeth
your mind bent on bloodlust

madness
charging your veins, driving your black heart
empty, but for this glowing need for more
this need to kill, to take, consume
everything you see
to set the world on fire
and feel it burn, burn, burn.

Our crime is one of omission:
we hold back, stay
shackled on the bench

iron life sentences handed down
by ten year old magistrates
and broken gods:
*you are*

never good enough
never kind enough
funny
smart
interesting
enough

we are tryhards
who won't try
to show up

we play
at playing
here to appease

the rowdy fans
in the back of our minds
the loud bleachers, cussing
at the ref, stomping their feet
fighting over hotdogs, the mob
of backseat quarterbacks THAT
WON'T
STOP
SHOUTING
in our ears

ENOUGH.
