“You’re about to enter a place of darkness, where you’re afraid to go, yet you’re driven on by a strange fascination, a curiosity, that causes you to act against your own sense of self-preservation in exchange for a thrilling moment aside from the humdrum of normality!” #halloween #horror #undead #ghosts #haunting by @jaycangram

Monday Monday so good to be drawing with the group and Leigh! Short to long poses in red chalk and charcoal on good old newsprint because it’s cheap and hell, you can still read 100 year old newspapers at the library so you know it lasts! #newsprint #livemodel #figurativeartist #johntullisfinearts #studio645 @fleurdeleighz by @jaycangram

I painted this plein air scene of Avalon Harbor about 10 years ago when I visited Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California. I recently touched up a few things that weren’t quite finished on the original day I was painting there.
Years passed, knowledge gained!

In old days there were no mirrors. People saw their reflections only in the faces of others, their expressions of grace and scorn. But one day a beautiful young hunter saw his own face in a pond. He told everyone about his wonderful discovery and soon people became enchanted by their own reflections. Time passed and progress gave the people glass, mirrors, shiny metal, and screens. Selfies! Now we gaze obsessively at selves: judging, comparing, flattering, filtering, smiling, frowning, picking, scraping, masking, making up, making over, teeth whitening, dermabrading, mutilating, questioning identity. Are we worthy enough? Lonely, lonely faces.

My charcoal/pastel drawing, “Gemini” just won an award at the Essential Figure Exhibit at the Bothwell Center for the Arts in Livermore, CA! Many thanks to artist Barbara Stanton who has tirelessly worked to promote the appreciation of figurative art in the San Francisco Bay Area for many years!
