This past week I have had the opportunity of coming to Fort Myers beach on a disaster relief trip, in response of Hurricane Ian that absolutely devasted the area.
I had never been on a mission trip, so I did not know what to expect, but I do believe that it has changed my life and the way that I think and see things. It was quite the eye-opener and taught me more than I ever thought it would.
We stayed about thirty minutes from Fort Myers Beach, so I didn’t get to see the real damage until we drove in to clean out debris from homes. I don’t even have the words for how I felt when I saw how absolutely devasted the area truly is. It is in complete ruin. My heart breaks for the community. These pictures do not even do it justice.
On the last night after we finished working at a house for the evening we got to go to the beach and watch the sunset. It was beautiful. To me this represented the beauty within the calamity. I also felt like it was God’s way of saying that He is still there, and He has not left His people. “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
Although, these are trying times for this whole community, it is uniting them. They are all lifting one another up in good spirits, and from what I have seen, more than willing to help a neighbor in need.
Overall, this has shown me to be grateful for the things that are too often taken for granted in this life, such as the roof over my head, the clothes on my back, my family, and friends because it can all be taken away so quickly and without warning. It has shown me that my “problems” are merely inconveniences.
Again, I am forever grateful for this experience and so incredibly blessed. I met so many amazing people on this trip and made unforgettable memories. My heart is SO FULL.
I ask that everyone continues to pray for the community of Fort Myers Beach, they have such a long way to go, but I genuinely do believe that they will get there ❤ by @jayceebrashear
