Former governor still on a mission to build a clean energy economy and protect our democracy.

There are 36 governor races on the ballot this November. The stakes are high and these state elections matter more than people may realize.

We have two more years of Trump. But states hold powerful levers to bring down electricity costs: utility regulation, permitting, and how fast new power gets connected to the grid. At least 21 brand-new governors will take office in January, and legislatures and utility commissions from Michigan to Wisconsin to Arizona to Georgia will decide who's holding those levers next.

That's not a down-ballot footnote—that's the whole ballgame for these midterms. The market has already made its choice: clean energy is cheaper and faster to build than anything else on the table.

Now it's up to us to elect the leaders bold enough to act on what the market already knows.

Former Governor of Washington Jay Inslee reflects on meeting a man whose home was destroyed in the Spokane fires this summer.

“I thought about his courage, and contrasted it by the rank cowardice of the executives of these oil companies — who sat there and took their millions of dollars home and now are too cowardly to accept responsibility for this.”

On Monday, October 5, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear Big Oil’s arguments to escape trial in one of the dozens of state and local lawsuits seeking to make fossil fuel companies pay for their decades of climate deception and the resulting local harms.

Communities are paying the price for Big Oil’s climate lies. They deserve their day in court to seek accountability. by @jayinslee

Demand for power is surging like we haven't seen in decades. Families are opening utility bills with dread. Solar, wind, and batteries are the answer to both problems, delivering more power for less money – faster than anything else on the table.

Come see us at #ClimateWeekNYC! 👋

This Tuesday (9/22), we’ll be co-hosting a panel with @unionofconcernedscientists, moderated by Emily Atkin of @heated.world, to discuss how Big Oil is pulling every lever to escape accountability for its role in the climate crisis — and how communities across the country are fighting back.

Joining the panel are former Washington Governor Jay Inslee, Platkin LLP partner Angela Cai, UCS Executive Director Dr. Pallavi Phartiyal, and Tennessee state Rep. Justin Jones.

The same corruption that allowed tobacco companies to buy political cover is playing out with coal—even as the math stopped making sense long ago:

📈Coal is the most expensive power source in America
📊 92% of new U.S. generating capacity added last year was clean energy
☀️ Solar alone made up over half of it

Everyone remembers where they were on 9/11.

One of my most vivid memories from that day was watching the news with my staff in one of the House office buildings after the towers were hit. The anchor reported that another building in New York had been hit, showing a familiar horizon with a structure on fire. I remember being aghast, thinking, “That’s not New York, that’s DC.”

I ran out of the building to see. It was the Pentagon, billowing with smoke.

Many forget that there was a fourth plane, Flight 93, likely intended for the US Capitol. The people aboard that plane are heroes, storming the cockpit and fighting the hijackers after learning about the other attacks. During the struggle, the plane crashed in an empty field in Pennsylvania, killing all on board. They sacrificed their lives and saved countless others. I will never forget the people on that flight and their bravery.

Charlie Greene’s father, Donald Greene, was aboard Flight 93, and his reflections on that day are something every American should read: “The heroes of that day showed us how to respond in our darkest hour. Our task now is to prove that, even 25 years later, we remember how to live together in the light.” by @jayinslee

Apparently, for Trump and Republicans, "energy dominance" really means more money for them, higher energy costs for everyone else. by @jayinslee

Most of America’s electricity grid, for the better part of a century, has been "renting" its power one fuel shipment at a time.

Clean energy resources are the closest thing the grid has to home ownership. Read my latest ➡ jayinslee.com by @jayinslee

It was a profound honor for Trudi and me to spend time with Gloria Steinem in her delightful home last year, leaving both of us reflecting on just how far her leadership has moved the world.

At its heart, that leadership was always about freedom: the freedom to realize a full life, on your own terms. She has inspired so many—me included—and that inspiration will live on. by @jayinslee
