Middleway

Almost 2 years to the day since I went for a walk along the Middleway, end to end, eleven miles round and about. I started amidst freezing fog and ended, back where I started, in golden winter sunshine.

It boggles me that the photos that I took that day are now on display at the Library of Birmingham. They are a small part of a much larger body of work that encompasses photography, poetry, and prose to make the "In Search of Urban Happiness" exhibition by the @gridprojectuk 🙂

Life in full colour

Twenty personal favourites that sum up my 2024.
I'd love to tell you that I discovered something deep and meaningful about my so-called creative journey during this year. The honest truth is, aside from being a wee bit more focused, I just took photos (and made projects of photos) of what I wanted to take photos of 📸

That, if anything, is what it's all about, is it not?

Everything else is just noise.

Passing impressions

For various reasons it’s been awhile since I’ve walked around the city. It was a fun walk today, the light was lovely and the company most convivial. I spent my time trying to perfect my slow shutter technique and I’m not quite there with it yet, but it was fun practicing in the sunshine.

Midnight in Mellieha

A last batch from Malta then. Taken during a humid, restless night when I was suffering yet another Hives flare up. Mellieha sits on a steep hill, its streets carved into the hillside. Its angles and ridges make for bracing walks and rather chaotic driving conditions.

White Rocks

Big cam pix from my holiday explore around the abandoned military barracks slash failed holiday resort slash new national park at White Rocks in Malta 🇲🇹.

Local contractors have just moved on site to start cleaning the area up and begin demolition of some of the unsafe structures. However, this being Malta it’s all quite lackadaisical so I was able to explore the entirety of this huge sprawling site. There was just one occasion when I felt unsafe, on a staircase that bounced under foot. I thought, feck that and moved on to the next block. Also, tiny scorpions in a broken toilet gave me pause 🙃

If you’re into abandoned places, graff, wild Agaves and dodgy toilets, White Rocks is easy to access, just make sure you wear good shoes and take plenty of water (it gets hot out there). White Rocks is on the coastal highway just outside Pembroke, a few miles west of Valletta 🤩

Saħħa Malta 😍

Today we bid a fond farewell to Malta 🇲🇹. Sue and I had a truly wonderful time (belatedly) celebrating 30th years together. It’s been quite awhile since we’ve been able to get away and Malta was the ideal destination for us. We wined and dined, traipsed and flaked, swam and sunned ourselves silly. All this despite both of us struggling with ongoing health issues 🙏🏻 Anyway, I’m quite tired now, I could do with another holiday to get over this one 🤣

White Rocks

About ten kilometres east of where we’re staying, high on an uncompromising ridge looking out across Pembroke Bay, sits the White Rocks Holiday Complex. This was a UK military barracks for serving personnel and families until 1979; later on the barracks were partially redeveloped as a Mediterranean resort in the 1980s but unfortunately the owners went bankrupt. The site was subsequently abandoned in 1995.

It’s a huge site comprising of a multiple phalanxes of concrete blocks that spread like waves across the hillside. As nature has reclaimed the landscape with vast swathes of Agave, giant Marram grasses, wild fennel and Eremurus, the old barracks have become a bit of graffiti magnet. I spent hours upon hours here exploring, feeling slightly agog at the endless buildings, gardens and deserted streets. Truly an amazing place that is set to become a national park.

A Day in Valletta

For months I’ve been battling an internal war of attrition with my immune system, manifesting as Chronic Urticaria (Hives). They’ve been quiescent of late but came roaring back yesterday 🥺 It made our visit to Valletta a bit difficult because it was warm and humid today. Staying hydrated and cool seemed to work, although the bus journeys were horrific 🥵

Anyhoo, Valletta. Well, to be fair we didn’t do that much. The highlight was definitely seeing two glorious Caravaggio paintings up close. No one did chiaroscuro quite like he did 😍

Pix snapped whilst we wandered about this tiny capital city. Valletta’s narrow streets and that glorious late afternoon Mediterranean light really lends itself to the Photographer’s Eye 👀📸

Gozo and Comino

Gozo and Comino are Malta’s little sisters, sitting just off its northern coast. We went on a cruise around both islands today, with time especially at Comino’s famous Blue Lagoon. The waters there are luminously turquoise and teem with glittering fish and 24 hour party boats. It’s beautiful and disappointing (because, people). I’d love to tell you what Gozo is like but we only saw it from the top deck of a dilapidated bus that kept breaking down. Still, the weather was epic and what we saw of the sights were quite lovely 🥰

Palm Beach

We went on an expedition to Palm Beach today. Not THE Palm Beach, obvs 🙄 The Maltese version is barely a hamlet of part built dreams, dead businesses, and a lovely restaurant cart. Seriously weird vibes here. The ‘resort’ of Palm Beach consists of precisely 5 Palm trees…. (see photo included here) it should really be called Prickly Pear Beach, but yeah, naming it for the local Opuntia cactus (which is EVERYWHERE) isn’t likely to draw the crowds in, I suppose. Still the beach was lovely, the crystal clear sea was eminently swim-able and warm, with spectacular views across to Comino Island.
I went for a walk across the ridge to the nearby shanty town of Ramla. This place has an interesting history of squatters occupying old holiday homes. The people here actually improved the housing, got it hooked up to the Maltese grid and water supply. The owners of nearby hotel complex that now overlooks Ramla have tried in recent years to have these houses demolished, but I found it to be a charming, peaceful place, so much more real and human than the emptiness that is Palm Beach….
