International Women’s Day.

This day is not about flowers and chocolates. It is not about men showering women with gifts on the one day of the year, only to ignore us again afterward. The origins of International Women’s Day go back to 1857 in New York, when 40,000 women in the textile industry went on strike demanding equality and protesting against working longer hours than men for less pay. Eventually, the concept of equality was born.

Sadly, in many places it still exists only as a concept, because women do not have the same rights as men. Even today, in many cases men who rape women (and tragically, children as well) are not held accountable. Although women are not the only victims, women are most often the ones who are objectified and treated as things for men to exploit.

On Women’s Day, I believe it is important to remember our fellow women who live in countries where they cannot even freely decide whom they marry, or where open rape is not considered a serious crime. Let us remember those whom the law not only failed to protect from oppressive men, but in some cases even enabled them.

Let us also remember ourselves, because surely every one of us can recall at least one sentence that humiliated us simply because we are women. Times when someone tried to tell us where our place was and what we were allowed to do.

This day should not only be about showing femininity, sparkling dresses, flowers, and how beautiful and aesthetic it is to be a woman—because it is not always like that at all. When it becomes only that, Women’s Day loses its original meaning.

So yes, instead of posting a pink-dressed, flower-filled picture, I am sharing this: the truth. The reality of what it can mean to be a woman. You can never be completely safe. For some men, we will always be nothing more than pretty objects to be used for their disgusting desires.

And I want to add: **not every man—but it is always a man.**

So please, let us remember what this day is truly supposed to be about.❤️‍🩹❤️ by @jayla.lp
