This felt timely to post, given the Odyssey coming out and this event having both Matt Damon and an oceans theme.
Why is a room full of institutional investors at Davos talking about Water Investing?
At Davos this week, the most interesting conversation wasn’t about governance or tokens, it was about H2O.
At the Second Annual NAT Water Dinner, Dr. Sylvia Earle laid it out: oceans and freshwater aren’t separate systems. They’re connected. And AI is about to stress that connection in ways most investors haven’t priced in.
Every ChatGPT query, every training run, every data center cooling system, it all runs on water. Massive amounts of it. As AI explodes, so does demand on systems already serving 2 billion people without reliable access.
This is the definition of asymmetric opportunity:
• If AI accelerates → exponential water demand for infrastructure
• If AI doesn’t → 2 billion people still need clean water
Either way, water wins.
This is Physical Systems Investing in action. While capital piles into software, the foundational infrastructure, water networks, regenerative ag, resilient housing, becomes more valuable, not less. These aren’t moonshots. They’re the scaffolding everything else sits on.

I’m melting at London Climate Action Week, and an event on Extreme Heat being cancelled due to Extreme Heat is irony I couldn’t have written myself.

Right now, 90% of all climate investment goes towards mitigation, with very little going towards adaption. Summers keep getting hotter, and adaptation is needed for us to survive.
