Amazing 2 hour lunch with @jaymccarrol the other day. If you haven't seen it yet go watch his film "Nirvanna The Band, The Show, The Movie" on Hulu or at an indie/art house theater near you. Fav thing I've seen (3 times in theaters) in a while. Also check out his scoring/piano work in the new A24 film "Tony." @ntbtstm by @jaymccarrol

What does a young Anthony Bourdain sound like before the world knows his name?

For ‘Tony’, composer Jay McCarrol turns inward with sparse piano, haunting harmonium and nautical textures, capturing Bourdain’s anger, uncertainty and inner turmoil.

Minimalist, stoic, and quietly dark - the score evokes a young man setting sail toward unknown horizon, carrying the weight of life we already know the ending to.

A kitchen is a cacophony. In the new Anthony Bourdain biopic 'TONY,' it's a busy, messy, noisy, percussive place. For the young Bourdain, still years away from becoming the culinary icon we know, every fuck-up seems punctuated by the sound of shattering dishes.

Against all that chaos, composer Jay McCarrol goes in the opposite direction. His minimal yet thunderous, bass-heavy piano score gives voice to the anger Bourdain refuses to express outright.

From Bourdain’s love of travel to his unmistakable presence, @jaymccarrol drew inspiration from the man himself when creating the score for TONY.

@jaymccarrol created the score for ‘Nirvanna the Band the Show’ comedy partner Matt Johnson’s new @a24 Anthony Bourdain biopic, ‘Tony.'

“It was certainly the most minimal I've gone,” he tells Billboard Canada. “I would toil over the small choices of the single notes to choose for his main [sonic] motif,” resulting in a sombre piano track that flows throughout the film.

Here, McCarrol shares some of his favourite film scores. Read our full interview with McCarrol at ca.billboard.com
