Graceful messengers of the gods 🦌

According to legend, the thunder god Takemikazuchi rode into Nara on a white deer, scroll in mouth, to warn mortals: these creatures would report their deeds to the heavens.

Shrines were built. Protection granted.

For centuries, the deer roamed freely—untouched, unafraid. Half-wild, half-sacred.

Honestly, Las Vegas is the most messed-up place I have ever been to. There, you can witness and experience everything in one location that can harm both our planet and its people. All consumption habits reach an extreme level; in that city, people simply don’t care.

The gap between the rich and homeless is widening year by year. You can see more and more people on the streets living in drains and tunnels beneath Las Vegas. At the same time, there are more casinos and luxury hotels for tourists who pour all their money into gambling.

Every time I visit there, I understand more and more how fortunate we are to live in Finland. It prompts me to contemplate ways in which we can take care of at least our local environment and society, and how we can build them sustainably for the future. by @jaysalonen

There are only right answers! Horizontal or vertical photos? Which is your favorite?

I prefer taking photos horizontally rather than vertically. Perhaps this preference is influenced by my desktop environment, where I have much more horizontal space than vertical. However, considering that social media platforms are primarily used on mobile devices, vertical photos might be better suited. I challenge myself to take more vertical photos in 2024; let's see how that goes.

Shot Sizes

There are quite many options to choose from, ranging from an extreme long shot to an extreme close-up, when we talk about shot sizes. Have you ever analyzed your shots to determine the most common shot size you use?

I have noticed that I usually shoot with a medium long shot, but crop all the photos to a medium close-up. Why? This approach gives me a bit more flexibility to crop and adjust the photo in post-production. Maybe this year, I will practice taking medium close-up shots from the start, so the post-processing would be more streamlined.

What is your favorite lens?

Do you prefer a wide-angle lens or a telephoto lens? A few years back, I upgraded from an SLR camera to a mirrorless Canon EOS R6, and there's no going back.

Previously, I photographed mostly with a wide-angle lens, but now I have switched to telephoto lenses. The Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 has been the latest addition to my collection. Perhaps my next acquisition will be one of the new RF prime lenses. Do you have any recommendations for which prime lens I should get?

Photos are taken at following focal lenghts: 15mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, 200mm, 400mm, 500mm, 800mm
