One thing about Australia that I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ll ever get over is how two completely different worlds can exist so close to each other.

One day, Iโ€™m walking through the city, surrounded by skyscrapers, old architecture, museums, cafeฬs and all that big city energy.

And the next, Iโ€™m walking along the coast, surrounded by lush greenery, blue ocean water and views that make me stop and wonder how this place is even real.

Sometimes you just drive for a little while and suddenly youโ€™re somewhere that feels like a completely different world.

And I think thatโ€™s what I love so much about living here.

Iโ€™m a massive city person. I love the buildings, the streets, the energy and having so much happening around me.

But give me a quiet coastal walk, a beautiful stretch of ocean and a little bit of greenery, and Iโ€™m just as happy.

The fact that I donโ€™t have to choose between the two will never stop amazing me.

๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ Mirissa: The Ultimate Guide & Itinerary

If youโ€™re travelling through southern Sri Lanka, Mirissa deserves more than just a quick beach stop. Hereโ€™s how to make the most of it ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ–๏ธ DAY 1: EXPLORE MIRISSA

๐ŸŒด Coconut Tree Hill
๐Ÿ๏ธ Secret Beach
๐ŸŒŠ Mirissa Beach
๐Ÿ“ธ Parrot Rock
๐ŸŒ… Sunset by the beach

๐Ÿ„ DAY 2: EXPLORE NEARBY

๐Ÿ„ Weligama for surfing
๐Ÿฐ Galle Fort for history and cafeฬs
๐Ÿ–๏ธ Unawatuna for beaches
๐ŸŒด Hiriketiya for a relaxed coastal vibe

๐Ÿ‹ DAY 3: EXPERIENCES

๐Ÿ‹ Whale watching in season
๐Ÿคฟ Snorkelling when conditions allow
๐Ÿ› Try local Sri Lankan food
๐ŸŒ… Enjoy a slow beach day

๐Ÿš† HOW TO GET TO MIRISSA

โœˆ๏ธ From Colombo Airport: private transfer takes roughly 2.5โ€“4 hours depending on traffic and route.

๐Ÿš‚ By train: take the coastal train from Colombo Fort towards Matara. Check whether your train stops at Mirissa; otherwise, get off at Weligama or Matara and take a tuk tuk.

๐ŸšŒ By bus: take a bus towards Matara, then connect to a local bus that stops in Mirissa.

๐Ÿ“ OTHER PLACES TO COMBINE

๐Ÿ‘‰ Galle: historic fort and colonial streets
๐Ÿ‘‰ Weligama: beginner surfing and cafeฬs
๐Ÿ‘‰ Unawatuna: beaches and coastal views
๐Ÿ‘‰ Hiriketiya: surfing and a laid-back beach town
๐Ÿ‘‰ Udawalawe: elephant safari if youโ€™re heading inland

๐Ÿ’ก MY TIPS

โ˜€๏ธ Visit the south coast generally from December to April for better beach weather
๐Ÿ›บ Use tuk tuks for nearby places
๐Ÿ’ต Carry cash for small cafeฬs and local transport
๐Ÿ‹ Choose responsible whale-watching operators and avoid boats that chase or crowd wildlife

โณ HOW LONG TO STAY?

2โ€“3 days is ideal for Mirissa itself. Allow 4โ€“5 days if you want to explore the surrounding coast without rushing.

Many things will disappoint you in life.

Japan will never be one of them. ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต

I spent 15 days exploring Japan, and somehow, it still feels like I barely scratched the surface.

The little streets, the bullet trains, the tiny ramen shops, the mountains, the temples, the vending machines on random corners and those quiet moments when you stop walking just to take everything in.

There were so many times I caught myself thinking, โ€œHow is this place even real?โ€

But what I loved most was how Japan could make an ordinary day feel special. A random walk, a train ride, a meal at a tiny restaurant. Even the simplest things became experiences I wanted to remember.

I came here with a long list of places I wanted to see, but I left wanting to come back.

And I think thatโ€™s the thing about Japan. You donโ€™t just leave with a camera roll full of beautiful pictures. You leave with the feeling that thereโ€™s still so much more waiting for you.

Japan, Iโ€™ll see you again. โค๏ธ taken in Japan by @jaystravelvlogs

How do I explain what it feels like to drive for hours with your friends, turn a corner and suddenly find yourself looking at something so beautiful that everyone goes quiet?

How do I explain the feeling of discovering places that look like they belong in another world, the little coastal towns, the endless roads, the mountains, the beaches and the sunsets that make you forget to check your phone?

But itโ€™s not just about the places.

Itโ€™s about the life Iโ€™ve built here. The people Iโ€™ve met, the experiences Iโ€™ve had and the version of myself Iโ€™ve become since moving here.

Australia has given me so many moments where Iโ€™ve just stopped and thought, โ€œFuck, is this actually my life?โ€

And I think thatโ€™s why I keep talking about it.

Because somewhere along the way, this country became so much more than a place I moved to. It became a place where Iโ€™ve grown, discovered so much about myself and made memories I know Iโ€™ll carry for the rest of my life.

I know every country has its problems, and Australia isnโ€™t perfect. But there are days when I look around and feel genuinely grateful that life brought me here.

So if I keep talking about Australia, this is why.

Iโ€™m not just showing you a country.

Iโ€™m showing you a little piece of the life Iโ€™ve fallen in love with. ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บโค๏ธ taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @jaystravelvlogs

At the start of this year, I made a promise to myself.

I wanted to have something worth remembering from every month. Something to look back on and think, โ€œFuck, I actually did that.โ€

And now, sitting here in October, with my student life in Melbourne almost coming to an end, Iโ€™ve realised something.

So many of the things Iโ€™m proud of this year happened because I simply said yes.

Yes to opportunities I wasnโ€™t sure I was ready for.

Yes to things I had never done before.

Yes to putting myself out there, even when I had no idea how things would turn out.

And somehow, one yes led to another.

I got to work with a brand Iโ€™d only dreamed of working with. I hosted a podcast. I took my mum overseas for the first time. I got opportunities I never thought would come my way. And I made memories I know Iโ€™ll be talking about for years.

No, I didnโ€™t become a millionaire overnight. My life isnโ€™t suddenly perfect, and I still have so much to figure out.

This isnโ€™t a flex. Itโ€™s a reminder.

Because for so long, I think we convince ourselves that we need to be more experienced, more confident, more successful or more ready before we can do something.

But what if you just started?

What if you applied for that job? Started that project? Went on that trip? Reached out to that person? Tried something that scared you a little?

What if you stopped counting yourself out before you even gave yourself a chance?

I genuinely believe that a big part of becoming the person you want to be is being willing to give yourself those chances.

And sometimes, the biggest thing standing between you and a life you love is the decision to try.

Iโ€™m still figuring things out. I donโ€™t know what the last three months of this year will bring, let alone what next year will look like.

But I know one thing.

Iโ€™m glad I said yes.

And if youโ€™re reading this, I hope you give yourself that same chance.

You donโ€™t need to have everything figured out. You donโ€™t need to be the best person in the room. You donโ€™t even need to know where something will lead.

Just stop assuming you canโ€™t.

You have so much more in you than you realise.

โ€œDonโ€™t travel alone. Youโ€™ll have a bad time.โ€

Jokes on you, bro. Some of the best trips Iโ€™ve ever had were with myself. ๐Ÿ˜‚โœˆ๏ธ

Nobody to wait for. Nobody to convince. Nobody asking me what the plan is every five minutes.

I wake up when I want, eat when Iโ€™m hungry, walk until my feet hurt, change my plans at the last minute and spend three hours exploring a random street just because I feel like it.

Iโ€™ve sat alone in restaurants, figured out public transport in countries where I couldnโ€™t even read the signs, gotten lost in unfamiliar cities and somehow made some of my favourite memories doing the most random things.

And the best part? I never had to wait for someone else to be available to experience any of it.

Of course, travelling with people you love can be amazing. But travelling alone teaches you something different.

You realise youโ€™re capable of so much more than you thought. You become comfortable in your own company. You stop being scared of doing things alone. And you start understanding that you donโ€™t need someone beside you to make a moment special.

Some of my favourite memories have no one elseโ€™s name attached to them. Just me, my backpack and a place I had been dreaming of seeing.

So please, donโ€™t cancel that trip because your friends canโ€™t make it.

Invite them, absolutely. But if they canโ€™t come, pack your bags and go anyway.

Because some of the best company youโ€™ll ever have is your own. ๐ŸŒ taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @jaystravelvlogs

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ This is your sign to explore a completely different side of Melbourne.

Just over an hour from the city, Cheviot Hill in Point Nepean National Park has coastal views that honestly look like another planet.

Hereโ€™s your guide to visiting ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ“ LOCATION

Cheviot Hill, Point Nepean National Park, Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia

๐Ÿฅพ THE WALK

๐Ÿ‘‰ Follow the walking trails to Cheviot Hill and the nearby lookout for views over Cheviot Beach and Bass Strait.

๐ŸŒŠ WHAT YOUโ€™LL SEE

๐Ÿ‘‰ Rugged coastline and turquoise water
๐Ÿ‘‰ Cheviot Beach from the lookout
๐Ÿ‘‰ Coastal walking trails
๐Ÿ‘‰ Historic military sites and old fortifications

๐Ÿš— HOW TO GET THERE

๐Ÿ‘‰ Around 90 km from Melbourne. Driving is the easiest option. Public transport is possible via Frankston and the 788 bus towards Portsea.

๐ŸŽ’ WHAT TO BRING

๐Ÿ‘‰ Comfortable walking shoes
๐Ÿ‘‰ Snacks and plenty of water
๐Ÿ‘‰ Sunscreen and a hat
๐Ÿ‘‰ Camera or phone
๐Ÿ‘‰ A light jacket for the coastal wind

๐Ÿ’ก TIPS TO KNOW

๐Ÿ‘‰ Combine Cheviot Hill with Fort Nepean and the historic Quarantine Station.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Stay on marked tracks and follow safety signs.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Swimming and beach access at Cheviot Beach are not permitted.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Check Parks Victoria for current track conditions before visiting.

๐Ÿ“ธ MY TIP

Take your time exploring the trails instead of visiting just one lookout. Point Nepean has so much more to offer than people realise.

Head outside Galle Fort and explore the southern coast.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Unawatuna Beach

You can easily spend most of the day around Unawatuna before heading back to Galle.

๐Ÿ’ฐ BUDGET

๐Ÿ  Budget stay: roughly US$10โ€“25
