1 year ago today, my athletic journey at ORU came to a close. Being the ambitious person that I am, I had high goals of reaching at least the first round of NCAA Outdoor Nationals, because I wanted to prove to myself and others that I was objectively a “good” track athlete. I figured being in the top 96 in the nation would satisfy me. Throughout the season, I had disappointing results meet after meet, and just when things were starting to look good near the end of the season, I had a minor injury that didn’t bench me completely, but also prevented me from competing at my fullest and (hopefully) qualifying for nationals. In the moment, I shelved my disappointment at missing my last opportunity to celebrate with/ say farewells to my teammates, but for a long while I never took the time to process/mourn my window of opportunity closing, as well as my time as a student athlete coming to an end.

Today, as I reflect on my athletic career at ORU, there’s SO much more to be grateful for than to mourn. I came in as an athlete with little to no accolades, jaded by countless losing seasons in high school, looking for mentorship and a place to belong. In @orutrack , I not only became a relatively successful athlete (4x All Conference, 2x Conference Champ, among other honors), but I gained a family, learned to believe in myself, grew in my faith, grew in my leadership, and created memories I’ll cherish forever. Though my last season wasn’t marked with dominance on the track, I believe in my last year I was a greater asset to my team than in any year prior, because of the knowledge, wisdom, experience, and character I brought to the table. And I thank God for teaching me a new lesson about myself while ushering me out of one season and into the next.
