She never got hit.

She was still in pain for days.

A car swerved toward her — no impact, no contact, nothing touched the car. But days later, she was in full-body pain, the same kind she'd had from a real accident the year before.

Here's the thing: pain isn't proof that something's damaged. It's your nervous system's alarm system — and sometimes the alarm goes off without a fire.

This is why "if it still hurts, something's still torn" isn't true. And it's why I don't just chase pain levels in a session — I look at what your body is actually doing, not just what it's telling your nervous system to feel. by @jazjwilson

Most people treat massage like a one-time fix. The research says that's not how recovery works.

150 athletes. 40-minute deep tissue sessions. Twice a week. Eight weeks straight.

Performance improved. Muscle recovery improved. Flexibility improved.

The variable that made the difference wasn't the session - it was the consistency.

Your body responds to what you do repeatedly. Recovery is no different.

Even a small improvement in sleep efficiency compounds over time. Better recovery, better mood, better focus — it adds up fast. Massage is one tool that's actually backed by research for this and it's more accessible than most people think. What are you currently doing to protect your sleep?

What you do after your massage helps determine how long the benefits last.

A few simple things that can support your body after a session:

• Take your time getting up — your nervous system may still be settling

• Drink water when you’re thirsty, not as a rule to “flush toxins”

• Expect possible soreness or fatigue — this doesn’t mean something went wrong

• Avoid intense workouts right away if your body feels heavy or sensitive

• Notice how your body feels over the next 24–48 hours — this helps guide future sessions

• Gentle movement, rest, or warmth can help your body integrate the work

This is part 3 of a short series on getting the most out of your massage.

Save this for after your next session.

What you do during your massage matters more than most people realize.

A few simple things can help your body feel safer, release more easily, and get more out of the session:

• Let your breath stay slow and natural — you don’t need to “do it right”

• Speak up about pressure, temperature, or positioning — feedback helps your therapist help you

• Notice if you’re holding tension in your jaw, hands, or breath (this is very common)

• If your mind wanders, gently bring attention back to your breath or the area being worked

• Remember: relaxation doesn’t always mean falling asleep — feeling present is just as valuable

This is part 2.

Next I’ll share what to do after your massage so the benefits last longer.

Save this for your next session

I’m a massage therapy student in Los Angeles… and I have questions.
So many questions.

As I learn this craft — from anatomy to fascia to trigger points to techniques I’ve never even heard of until now — I’m sharing everything I discover along the way.

If you’ve ever wondered how massage really works, what’s happening under the skin, or what it’s like to grow in this field… you’re in the right place.

This is the beginning of The Who, What & Whys of Massage — my journey, my learning, and all the real questions that come with it.

SIGNS YOU MIGHT NEED A MASSAGE 👇

Sometimes your body whispers before it starts shouting. Here are a few subtle cues that it’s time to get some bodywork done:

💤 You’re always tired, even after rest
💻 You catch yourself slouching or your posture feels “off”
🧠 You’re irritable, anxious, or mentally foggy
💪 You have tight shoulders, neck pain, or frequent headaches
🚶 You feel stiff or notice limited range of motion
🫀 You’re holding stress in your body without realizing it

Massage isn’t just for when you’re in pain — it’s maintenance for your nervous system, muscles, and mind.

💬 Which one of these sounds like you lately?

MYTH BUSTED: “One massage fixes everything.”

❌ The Myth: One good massage will make all the tension disappear forever.
✅ The Truth: Just like exercise, results build over time. One session helps you reset, but consistency is what creates lasting change — in posture, pain, and stress levels.

Think of massage as body maintenance, not a one-time repair. The more regularly you care for your muscles and fascia, the longer your body stays aligned, mobile, and pain-free.

💬 How often do you usually get bodywork?
