I’m literally living in my own Gothic novel! Today I visited my beloved Pool Park—the mansion that inspired the novel I’m writing. I adore this place.

My second time visiting, the owners (who are so supportive of my writing) gave me a walkie-talkie incase I needed help, unlocked the doors, and allowed me to roam the house and grounds for hours. Unreal!

I’m forever grateful to the Godfreys for being so kind and generous. I’m so looking forward to seeing the house once it’s renovated. by @jazz_delapaz

I had to jump on this trend. I feel I don’t share much about my WIP, so when I saw @carmcatena and a few other writer friends post their Pantone colors for their books, I knew I had to do the same.

After spending too much time searching through shades of red, I came across the color PERIOD! The perfect color to describe my feminine, 19th-century Gothic horror book. Set in an abandoned women’s asylum, hysteria was the most common diagnosis for institutionalization, thought to be brought on by puberty, periods, and menopause. I’ve done extensive research for my book (researching more than I should) and plan to start a Substack soon, featuring essays that cover this topic and more. by @jazz_delapaz

My Substack essay, ā€œThe Surgical Removal of Women’s Sexual Desires in the Victorian Era,ā€ is the first of many essays to come where I share historical details about the mistreatment of women that I learned in researching my gothic horror novel.

This essay follows Doctor Brown, who performed clitoridectomies as treatment for hysteria. His reasoning is ridiculous, yet it demonstrates the power doctors and men held over women’s autonomy in Victorian medicine.

In the end, I go off a bit . . .
ā€œHistory repeats itself, and to protect ourselves, we must know our past.ā€

I would love to hear your thoughts! Link in bio and stories. by @jazz_delapaz

A lovely rainy day at the library in Ruthin, formerly an 18th century County Hall. I spent a couple of hours upstairs, perusing and reading the research books that I could never get my hands on otherwise. My favorite has to be ā€˜Beautiful North Wales’ which includes picturesque b&w photos of areas I adore. by @jazz_delapaz

Rogues, Rakes and Robbers is a narrative nonfiction of gruesome true crimes taken from court records and archives of Georgian Wales. I’m learning a quite a bit about the life of common people during this time (which I feel is often overlooked) and what caused them to commit these crimes. It’s well researched, craftily written, and includes maps!! by @jazz_delapaz

Today I visited Plas Newydd, a Gothic mansion once home to the Ladies of Llangollen—two upper-class Irish women who eloped and moved to Wales in the late 18th century. They purchased this home, gothicizing it over the years using Jacobean bedposts and carvings from churches. It’s quite spectacular! And you would think their situation would scandalize society, yet their relationship and home attracted many famous visitors including Sir Walter Scott and the Duke of Wellington. by @jazz_delapaz

I spent the day at Nantclwyd y Dre—one of the oldest houses in Wales that is dear to my heart. I love spending time there, waking up and down the stairs and strolling through the beautiful garden. Everyone is wonderful there and it’s such a special place. I wrote about this house in my Gothic horror novel and the ending scene takes place in the parlor. ✨ by @jazz_delapaz

I spent six hours at the archives today, reading through asylum case notes, floor plans, medical journals, visitors notes, and reception orders—my brain is maxed out and my eyes are red, yet I learned so much. Incredible experience! by @jazz_delapaz

The Sunken, The Adored: A Lovecraftian gothic horror fever dream of a book. I LOVED it. I will read anything that Donyae Coles writes. Her prose is lush—different—but the story itself is strange and intriguing, equal parts grotesque and enchanting. I had no clue what was going to happen (sometimes a bit confused) but in the end, I was FLOORED. I often find myself daydreaming about this book.

Mercy leaves a ghost ship free from enslavement, lugging nothing but a daguerreotype camera straight to the door of Umberto, an Anatomist, who hires her to photograph c0rpses for medical purposes. He takes her to the manor of the Contessa, a glorious house filled with artists and brimming in decadence: silk gowns, entertainment, bubbling baths, and most of all, rich food (for Mercy is hungry). The Contessa agrees to have Mercy for the season to photograph her guests. There, Mercy eats and eats and enjoys her freedom with newfound friendships. But something haunts the canals of Venice, a beast of sorts, also hungry, and also knocking upon the door of the manor, requesting Mercy.

This is a book you want to take your time reading. Cherish every sentence, every strange passage. I also recommend her debut: Midnight Rooms. Enjoy the fever dream. by @jazz_delapaz
