Remembering Sam Noto: A Buffalo Jazz Great

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Sam Noto, the extraordinary jazz trumpeter and Buffalo native who left his mark on the world of jazz. Sam passed away on October 16 at the age of 96.

From his beginnings in Buffalo, Sam went on to perform with some of the most celebrated orchestras in jazz, including those led by Stan Kenton, Count Basie, and Woody Herman. His remarkable command of the trumpet, particularly his bebop playing, earned him the respect of fellow musicians and jazz audiences throughout a career that spanned decades.

Sam was also part of an extraordinary legacy of Italian-American musicians who helped shape jazz, both here in Buffalo and far beyond. Alongside musicians such as Don Menza and Phil DiRe, he represented a generation whose artistry carried Buffalo's musical heritage onto national and international stages.

What makes Sam's story especially meaningful is that his contribution extended beyond performing. He was also a bandleader, recording artist, and an important part of Buffalo's jazz history, helping create opportunities for jazz to be heard and enjoyed in his hometown.

As we remember Sam Noto, we are reminded of the remarkable musical talent that has come from Buffalo and the generations of Italian-American artists who have contributed so much to the American art form of jazz.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Sam's family, friends, and the many musicians whose lives he touched.

For those who would like to learn more about Sam's remarkable life and share condolences with his family, we invite you to read his obituary from Lombardo Funeral Home:

His music and his place in Buffalo's jazz history will long be remembered.

Rest in peace, Sam Noto. by @jazzbflo

One of the great joys of jazz is discovery.

Over the years, JazzBuffalo audiences have had the chance to experience artists like Samara Joy, Emmet Cohen, and Veronica Swift during that remarkable stretch when their careers were taking off.

We believe Nicole Zuraitis is in one of those moments right now.

She's already a two-time Grammy Award winner, a 6-time Grammy Nominee, and one of the most compelling vocalist-musicians in jazz. But for many people in Buffalo, Nicole may still be a new name.

That's exactly why we think this concert is worth paying attention to.

Our latest story is about discovery, why we believe Nicole is an artist to experience now, and why seeing her at Jazz at Kleinhans in the intimate Mary Seaton Room at @kleinhansmusichall could become one of those concerts you look back on and say:

I was there.

We've seen this happen before.

Over the years, JazzBuffalo audiences have had opportunities to experience artists like Samara Joy, Emmet Cohen, and Veronica Swift as their careers were taking off.

There is something special about catching an artist during that moment.

We believe Nicole Zuraitis is another one to watch.

She's already a two-time Grammy Award winner — a remarkable vocalist, pianist, songwriter, and arranger whose career continues to rise. She is predicted to receive her 7th-plus Grammy nomination when they are announced in mid-November for her groundbreaking "The Devil I Knew"

But don't take our word for it.

Take 40 seconds. Turn up the sound. Watch this.

Then imagine experiencing Nicole in the intimate Mary Seaton Room at Kleinhans Music Hall for this Jazz at Kleinhans event kicking off our 2026-2027 season.

Sunday, November 8 may turn out to be one of those afternoons when you'll be glad you were there.
