Grab your winter coat and koto, we’re back with a slightly seasonal special! Link in bio.

In this episode, we chart floral and festive paths from the library music-inspired serenity of Sven Wunder’s ‘Snowdrops’, to Roland Kirk’s honktacular rendering of ‘We Free Kings’.

En route we take in hip-hop, Japanese jazz and even some Christmas music, plus a brief rundown of some of our favourite albums of the year.

Stay tuned as we get cooking again in 2024.

In our bumper anniversary 10th edition we pay tribute to two jazz giants: percussion legend James Mtume and vibes wizard Khan Jamal. Link in bio...

Which route best connects them? Via the West Coast, or the astral plane?

Dan travels through time and Ollie through space, on a cosmic journey that passes Philly, pharaohs and psychedelic beanies.

Thanks for indulging us for 10 episodes, and stay tuned for more astral traveling this year.

Roads? Where we’re going, we only need Rhodes.

We take flight in Episode 9 with two classic live cuts: Joe Henderson’s ‘Junk Blues’ and Don Pullen & George Adams’ ‘Saturday Night In The Cosmos’. Link in bio...

What’s the best route? Via Italy and Japan? Or as the crow flies? Ornithophobics need not apply.

Thanks for all your support in this first year of the podcast and stay tuned for more Routes in the new year.

Keep watching the skies!

We’re back! After a busy period of new jobs, new musical projects and new strains of Covid, we reconnect and rejoin the dots between two more of our favourite tracks. Link in bio…

In this episode, we pay tribute to the late, great MF Doom, the metal-faced enigma we lost on Halloween 2020.

But what connects the supervillain to ‘70s funk supremos the Ohio Players? What’s Cole Porter got to do with Giorgio Moroder? And where does an Anglo-Trakehner stallion fit into all this?

Get your Gazzillion Ears round episode 8 to find out.

Episode 7 is out now! Link in bio.

What links the ambient jazz of Bennie Maupin’s ‘Past + Present = Future’ and the dusty grooves of DJ Krush’s ‘Dig This Vibe’? What is the best soundtrack to getting probed by aliens? And what is the French version of the Mafia? Find out all this and more in this abstract episode of the podcast – along with more of Ollie’s flawless impersonations of instrumental jazz.

Expect improved production quality once again as we dig into Japanese hip-hop, the legacy of Herbie Hancock and a classic collaboration between two jazz giants (and we don’t mean us).

Full track listings of every episode can be found on the website, along with links to Spotify and Apple Music. Hit subscribe, spread the word and get in touch with your suggestions, feedback, reverb and noise.

Thanks as always for listening and keep watching the skies!

Episode 6 is live and broadcasting direct to your jazz-loving ear holes!

In this tribute episode, we join the dots between Stanley Cowell’s heartfelt composition ‘Sienna: Welcome My Darling’ and Chick Corea’s swirling, impressionistic ‘Litha’. Plus we delve into Sweden, beekeeping and the discography of L. Ron Hubbard – and be sure to listen out for Ollie’s uncanny impression of a shakuhachi.

And yes, the production quality keeps improving as we plan to take over the podcast game. Expect less noise/reverb and an all-round more balanced listening experience!

As always, link in bio to our website where you’ll find the podcast, full track listings and links to Spotify and Apple Music. Don’t forget to hit those subscribe and follow buttons to stay in the loop for future episodes!

Thanks to those who listen for the continued support and have a wonderful, jazz-filled rest of the week!

Episode 5 is live!

This time we break free of our jazz shackles, tracing a path between the psychedelic folk rock of Crosby, Stills and Nash’s ‘Wooden Ships’ and the ’90s bossa-infused hip-hop of ‘Runnin’ by The Pharcyde. We dive into West Coast rock and rap, the genius of J Dilla and a certain cartoon bird…

And finally, we’ve recently upped our post production game and so everything now sounds more sexy and less like it was recorded in a cave.

If any of this tickles your musical feelers, please give it a spin! Link in bio to our website where you’ll find links to Spotify, Apple Music and Soundcloud. And as always, if you enjoy it, don’t forget to hit those subscribe and follow buttons to stay in the loop for future episodes!

Thanks for the support everyone, spread the good word and have an enjoyable rest of the week.

For those who want more, here’s Episode 4!

This time we connect two very different tracks recorded 10 years apart - the free-leaning post-bop of Eric Dolphy’s ‘On Green Dolphin Street’ and the dark, funky, cinematic vibes of Gary Burton’s ‘Las Vegas Tango’. Plus hip-hop and samples and films, oh my!

We touch on tragedy, racism and the use of jazz in cinema - as well as the relationship between jazz and hip-hop, discussing the music of Cypress Hill, The Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest.

If this sounds interesting, have a listen! Link in bio where you’ll find links to Spotify, Apple Music and Soundcloud. And as always, if you enjoy it, don’t forget to hit those subscribe and follow buttons to stay in the loop for future episodes!

Thanks for the support everyone and have a great rest of the week.

The second episode of Routes: A Jazz Impressions Podcast is now live!

Thank you for the amazing response to our first episode and to everyone that took the time to listen. It really is appreciated and we took your feedback on board and have hopefully made an even better second episode. Bear with us whilst we find our flow!

In this Blue Note heavy episode, we discuss an underappreciated gem from master vibesman Bobby Hutcherson, the compositional talents of Joe Chambers, the lyrical side of Freddie Hubbard and the legacy of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Also, there’s a special guest appearance from a squeaky garage door trying to imitate Wayne Shorter.

As always, we hope you all enjoy it as much as we did recording it and we’d love to hear from you all with thoughts, feedback, hatemail, etc. The podcast is now on all major platforms and so make sure to hit those subscribe and follow buttons! Link in bio. Already in the process of editing Episode 3 so stay tuned…

Much love and thanks for the support,

Ollie and Dan
