Last night was one for the books. "Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and all that Followed" was supremely moving and an important chronicle of early Black Broadway history. Comprised of one of the most stacked casts in Broadway history, what a gift to us that they brought it back, ten years after closing, for two performances.
If you didn't hear the news yet, this performance will be presented on PBS in 2027, so everyone can finally see this great work of art.

I expect that it will take a few posts to try to sum up Friday night and what a meaningful and joyous experience it was. However, I need to start by posting my most sincere gratitude before another day passes. To begin with, I would like to thank the @americantapdancefoundation, @waagville and @brenda.bufalino for honoring me with the Hoofer Award. It is a heck of thing to be noticed by your peers!

A very genuine thank you to the dancers of @chicagotaptheatre. They put in so much extra work and danced with a fierceness that was inspiring. An extra special thanks to @sterlingxharris, who arranged 24 years of my choreographic work into a tight 9 minute piece, and to @mollysmith49 who brought it to life in the studio. Watching them perform this work was literally one of the proudest moments I've ever had as an Artistic Director. Every dancer brought their very best performances, including @roxydot22, @heather_latata, @sararochelle05, @chrysanthemum.tap and @greta.sorensen.

And mannnn, getting to dance a quick ditty with the incomparable @lisalatouche was the best way to cap the show off. There is no better way to bring joy and love to a stage than have Lisa join you on stage.

And GAHHH the audience! Filled with so many friends, family, colleagues and mentors who made the trek to New York (or live there) and helped to make this somewhat overwhelming experience extra personal and meaningful. From my godmother, @dianne_walker138, to fellow honoree @thelmstaps and SO many others.

♥️🩶🐺 UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO 🐺🤍🖤

The annual @americantapdancefoundation Hoofer Award recognizes prominent tap artists as leaders in the community for their unique contribution to the form and for inspiring future generations.

It has just been announced that Mr. Mark Yonally (@jazztapdancer) will be awarded one of two Hoofer Awards for 2026! Mark is a 1999 graduate of @uofnm in Albuquerque.

Mark, a native of Shawnee, Kansas, is the founder and Artistic Director of @chicagotaptheatre, a critically acclaimed dance company in Chicago, which will be performing an annual three-show season and touring in America and Europe. Their performances have been recognized by the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, SeeChicagoDance, and Windy City Media, with the 2016 show “TimeSteps” named Best New Production by Dance Magazine Reader’s Poll.

Mark is renowned internationally, performing solo in cities like Chicago, Helsinki, Barcelona, New York, Amsterdam, and Paris, and has worked with mentors such as Sam Weber and Dianne Walker. He has performed with the Bill Evans Dance Company and Especially Tap Chicago at prestigious festivals, including the St. Louis Tap Festival and the Royal Opera House in Helsinki. His choreography has been commissioned by various dance companies, and he collaborates with Valérie Lussac and Guillem Alcalay, teaching annually in Toulouse and Barcelona. Mark teaches and judges at dance conventions across the US and is an educator at @oklahomacityuniversity / @okcudance_ and @hopecollege. He has published in @dancespiritmagazine, @danceteachermagazine, and @dancemagazine, and hosts “The Tea on Tap,” featuring interviews with noted tap dancers.

I've been waiting so long to post this, and I think it's because this was such an intensely moving experience for me. But the opportunity to shine a light on some amazing organizations, like @nocca.nola and @vaneworleans is too great, and my need to thank one of the Universes truly great humans @heiditaps is too pressing to not post it! by @jazztapdancer

This week, @jazztapdancer, Mark Yonally of Chicago Tap Theatre, joined the NOCCA Dance Department for a week-long intensive with our talented students.

Special shoutout to the students who received Chicago Tap Theatre scholarships during the residency. 👏

Mark is serving as the Spring Guest Choreographer for this year’s dance performance, and we can’t wait to share what they’ve been creating in the studio. Stay tuned!
