1. Become a Specialist – If you can master one skill on the court, you can play at a high level. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t develop the rest of your game. You should strive to be a well-rounded player, but elite at one thing. That’s what separates you from the competition. Shooting, defense, driving, rebounding, running the offense, passing, or communication—become elite at one of those areas, and you can put yourself in position to play Division I basketball.

2. Star in Your Role – This comes down to being coachable and doing what the team needs you to do. If you can make your team better by embracing your role and checking your ego at the door, you can play at a high level. Great players understand that success comes from maximizing their impact, regardless of their role.

3. Make Sure Your Height Matches Your Position – At the Division I level, it becomes very difficult to compete if you are undersized for your position. If you are 6’4” or under, you should be developing guard skills because you will be a guard. At that level, you are unlikely to play exclusively as a post player. Big men who have guard skills gain an advantage, but for players 6’4” and under, guard skills are essential. Ball handling, shooting, passing, defense and decision-making should be priorities because those are the skills that translate to the next level 6’4” and under.

1. Teammates – I would not have been able to accomplish this without the incredible teammates I’ve had throughout the years. I was fortunate to play alongside elite point guards who consistently put me in positions to succeed and teammates who were always willing to make the extra pass. Their unselfishness and support played a major role in helping me achieve this milestone.

2. Coaches’ Trust – The confidence my coaches instilled in me over the years translated directly to my performance on the court. It was easy to step into shots with confidence because I knew I had their complete trust and belief. That trust allowed me to play freely and perform at my best.

3. Breaking Records – Going into my final two years, I made it a goal to leave my mark and cement my place in the record books. I was able to accomplish that by setting single-game and single-season three-point records at two different schools. I approached every game with confidence and consistently looked to showcase my abilities whenever the opportunity presented itself. And I never passed up a shot! by @jb4hoopsdevelopment

1. Defense – If you can’t play defense, it will be difficult to stay on the floor. Playing hard on the defensive end and consistently getting stops will automatically earn you more minutes. Coaches always have room in their rotation for players who can defend.

2. Rebounding – Coaches love rebounders at every level. If you can consistently rebound the basketball, you’ll find yourself on the court more often. Securing extra possessions for your team while preventing second-chance opportunities for your opponent is a valuable skill that every coach appreciates.

3. Floor Spacing – If you can shoot the three-point shot, you’ll create opportunities to stay on the floor. Floor spacers make the offense run more efficiently by forcing defenders to respect the perimeter. This opens driving lanes, creates better scoring opportunities for teammates, and keeps the defense honest. Every successful offense needs players who can stretch the floor. by @jb4hoopsdevelopment
