This week Jerome and I had to do the impossible and say goodbye to our sweet boy Jackson.

He came into our lives in the most unexpected way that was clearly meant to be. We had almost 12 years together, but it was not enough. Though doggy dementia (CCD) took him from us, we will never forget all of the memories the three of us made together.

He lived in 9 houses with us, all across the KC metro. No matter where we lived, he loved our morning walks to coffee, our evening toy time and sleeping at the foot of our bed. He would wake us up with a face full of kisses and end the day with a loud sigh and a roll of his eyes (I think he learned it from Jerome).

During his life, Jerome and I started the child adoption process, but we never needed to, as he had already made us dads and we already had our baby boy.

We will miss him every day, in ways both big and small. His perfect coif, his flamboyant prance (he may have learned that one from me), his piercing bark that caught your attention and his constant shivers from both being cold and at the same time anxious.

He challenged us in some ways and we made sacrifices in our lives for him, but we wouldn’t trade that or this unbearable heartache for the time we had together.

Rest in Peace buddy, your dads love you and miss you terribly.

Happy Heavenly Father’s Day to my special Dad! This Father’s Day is hitting me a little different…I am not a dad myself but imagine it’s one of the greatest gifts. One that comes with many situations, challenges and emotions. I came out to my dad, mom, family and friends almost 20 years ago (the most terrifying moment of my life) and was embraced 100%. But I have one regret…before my dad died I didn’t thank him for his unconditional love, support, and acceptance. And years later the power of hearing from my dad, “Jerome- I am so proud of you and Kyle, you’re such a great team and I love you both”. The power of those words from a father to his gay son are immeasurable. Listen up Dads(parents)!!! Remember that your kids are a gift. Listen to them, love them, support them and accept them!
