They call it “Gotcha Day” when you rescue a dog - as if we were the ones doing the rescuing. But standing here in the kitchen, without you close by (in case I accidentally on purpose decide to “drop” a piece of cheese or chicken) looking back at this photo from the day it all began— the day you chose us - with your wiggle but and Bugs Bunny ears - I think it’s clear who really did the rescuing.
Somehow, from the very first hello, you were the absolute perfect dog for us - you claimed the kids’ hearts from the very first minute, filling the madness and the chaos of our days with the purest, most loyal friendship, and most gentle and unconditional love. You had such a special and unique relationship with each of us - because you loved us each in the exact way we needed. Saying goodbye yesterday was the hardest thing I’ve ever done but on your Gotcha Day I promised you that from that moment you were safe and loved. Thank you for letting us love you and for choosing us.

It was truly a great one… hearing from and being thought of by so so many (especially in this crazy season of life) is more and more meaningful with every year that passes. Today you are 12 and I can honestly say that I have loved and cherished every year, month, week, day, minute and second of being your mom. It is an honor and privilege to be on this journey with you. Another new year, another year older, same first day wishes for these 2 … On your first day of 6th and 4th grades... I hope you smile - it will let people know you have an open heart. I hope you are kind. I hope you are YOU - but I also hope you learn the joy in a good compromise. I hope you make at least 1 good friend because really that’s all you need - but I also hope you welcome new friends especially if you see them sitting alone. I hope you learn - not only scholastically but even more importantly about yourself and what makes you interesting and different. I hope you ask questions of your surroundings, your friends, your teacher and yourself. I hope you are not afraid even if sometimes things are hard and sometimes you fall. You already know you have the biggest cheerleader and fan in me.
